For new students who are undecided or would like a structured way to explore their academic & career options, we’re excited to offer a wider array of COL 101 sections. This Fall, we’re debuting many different specialized sections, including:
- 11504 – For students exploring careers in Health Sciences
- 34416 – For Asian and Pacific Islander students (in collaboration with WAVES)
- 11537 – For international students
- 33259 – For Athletes
We’re also offering a similar course for ESL students: Preparing for College & Career Success (COL 90). This course will offer much of the same content but differentiated for English language learners.
Refresh my memory: What is COL 101?
Introduction to College & Career Success (COL 101) is designed for new, undecided students in their first or second quarter at Shoreline. However, the course is beneficial for anyone who has not yet chosen a program of study at Shoreline.
In the course, students will:
- Identify strengths and interests
- Explore career goals and create academic plans
- Navigate and access campus resources and services
- Connect with a dedicated Peer Mentor for extra support
The three-credit course is conveniently offered both online and in-person, with early- and late-start options available. The course counts as a restricted elective toward the AA-DTA and most other degrees.
Why Should Students Take this Class?
Did you know that 37% of new, degree-seeking students who start in Fall do not return to Shoreline in the Winter? What’s more, only 27% of degree-seeking Shoreline students complete their credential within three years. Per SBCTC’s FTEC Dashboard as of 8/17/2023
COL 101 is a retention strategy: research shows that students who take a class like this are more likely to stay in college, complete their degree, and have stronger academic success. Taking COL 101 helps students clearly see their pathway to completion and develop a comprehensive academic plan from the get-go.
You can review all COL 101 offerings via the Fall course schedule.
