Summer is a great time to take a breath and make plans for the coming year. If your plans include sponsoring the Foundation’s Giving Table Luncheon in November, right now, just prior to the end of the Foundation’s fiscal year, is the perfect time to give! You can learn more about sponsorships here and more about the Giving Table Luncheon here

Wish you could be a sponsor but don’t think you can afford it? Use the Employee Payroll Deduction Form. By spreading your gift throughout the year, just $42 per pay period is more than enough to be a Luncheon Sponsor!

Regardless of the size of your gift (some payroll deduction donors give as little as $1 per paycheck), your contribution is appreciated, and you are making a real difference in the lives of our students.  Thank you for all the good things you do for our students!

Summer camps on campus

Images of children engaging in different sports and other activities.

Summer youth camps are back on campus starting this week and running through the end of August.

Athletics is hosting basketball, soccer and volleyball camps in the gym, and we have Steel Toe Teens trades camp for girls in the Automotive Building, as well as hands-on Arts, STEAM computer/game design, Advanced Java coding, Filmmaking and more! The theater will also be hopping in July with the “Newsies” Musical camp rehearsals with Woodland Park Players.

Check out the Summer Camps schedule for more information. Contact continuing-ed@shoreline.edu or Suzanne Gugger for details.

Shoreline is also hosting Pedalheads, a bicycle training camp for kids in the upper/middle parking lot by #2000 all summer. Please watch for kids on bikes in the parking lot as they venture out on local excursions with their camp leaders. Contact Tierra Johnson, Rentals, at events@shoreline.edu if you have any questions.

Campus Updates 6/18/2026

Hello all,

This past week was a powerful reminder of what makes Shoreline College so special!

There is truly nothing like a nursing pinning ceremony. Not a dry eye in the house, and for good reason. It was an honor to celebrate our nursing graduates alongside faculty, friends, and families who supported them every step of the way. Congratulations to our exceptional students and to the incredible faculty who guide them—nurses are amazing, and so are those who teach them. Grateful as well for A.J. Mendoza, Dalila Paredes, and Ryan Aiello, Ph.D., for their leadership and presence.

We also concluded the America at 250: Hope, Joy, Civic Renewal series, thanks to the thoughtful coordination of Ken Winnick and Kenneth Doutt. The final conversation, featuring Sean Goode and Priya Frank, brought warmth, honesty, and a sense of shared responsibility to care for one another. It was equally encouraging to see so many community members gathered in our library.

Our undergraduate research showcase highlighted the academic excellence and curiosity that define our students. Their professionalism and depth of knowledge were truly impressive. Many thanks to the many faculty who organized such a meaningful opportunity for student scholarship, including Michael Overa, Rachel Rawle, Vashuda Sundaravadan, Orlando DeLange, and Joyce Fagel.

Finally, we had the privilege of honoring this year’s retirees. Hearing colleagues reflect on the impact of their work was both moving and inspiring. These individuals have helped shape Shoreline in lasting ways, and we are deeply grateful for their service and commitment. Thank you to Ryan Aiello, Ph.D., Maiya Bailey, Julie Bathke, Dalila Paredes, and many others who helped create such a thoughtful and celebratory gathering.

As we look ahead, we are preparing for Commencement—one of the most meaningful moments of the year. Congratulations to our graduates, and happy Commencement. I look forward to celebrating with many of you. See you there!

Cheers,

Jack

Events and News

This was a very full week with meaningful celebrations, community connections, and continued progress on key college priorities.

I had the opportunity to celebrate several Shoreline Community College employees who retired this year. It was a truly special gathering, with supervisors and colleagues sharing stories that highlighted the lasting impact these individuals have had on our students and community. I’m grateful to Ryan Aiello, Maiya Bailey, Julie Bathke and the many others who organized such a thoughtful and memorable event.

Farther afield, we celebrated our global reach as a cohort of Shoreline students in China gathered for a pre-graduation celebration. It was inspiring to see their accomplishments recognized as they prepare to transfer to universities across the United States and Canada. Their success reflects the strength of our international partnerships and programs.

I attended a unique and engaging event at the Consulate General of India in Seattle marking the arrival of Indian mangoes to the region through Costco. Beyond the fun and excellent food, it was a great opportunity to connect with consulate leaders, state representatives, and community partners, and to reflect on the role of international relationships in strengthening our community.

Closer to home, I was proud to learn about some updates on faculty excellence as Nicole Lupinacci from our Medical Laboratory Technology program presented at the national ASM Microbe conference in Washington, D.C. Congrats to Professor Lupinacci and the department!

I also had the pleasure of attending the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society induction and graduation ceremony. These students exemplify a deep commitment to scholarship and service, and it’s always inspiring to recognize their achievements. Special thanks to Audrey Reuter for her ongoing mentorship and support of these students.

In the broader community, I attended the City of Shoreline’s State of the City event, where Mayor Betsy Robertson shared updates and vision for the city. It was a great opportunity to connect with regional partners and reinforce the importance of our continued collaboration.

On campus, I joined in celebrating Pride through a vibrant, student-led event that brought together the Pride Festival and SUN Fest. Organized in partnership with the Office of yəhaw̓ Center for Student Empowerment, it was a joyful day filled with connection, celebration, and community spirit.

Alongside these events, I continued our ongoing work on policies and procedures, budget planning, and developing new partnerships that will support our students and strengthen the college moving forward.  And looks like it’s going to be a nice sunny weekend, so enjoy!

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 6/4/2026

Hey folks, I hope you are having a good week.  It’s been a busy one in the president’s office.

I attended Shoreline’s State of the City and was able to speak a bit with Representative Davis and Shayna Daitch (the rep for Senator Murray) about some areas of shared interest (and of course making sure they are repping Shoreline College out there!).  I will keep you updated with that.

I was able to attend the Phi Theta Kappa ceremony, which was really wonderful.  Larger crowd than usual (from what I could tell) and Audrey Reuter did a great job as usual as mentor and MC. The students were so excited and proud of their work.   I also attended the American Democracy: Indigenous Roots & Future event. I learned a lot about America’s burgeoning democracy and the Indigenous influences on its development – really fascinating.

Though it wasn’t in our general area, I did want to mention the explosion at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company in Longview, Washington. Eleven folks were pronounced dead – a tragic loss. I know WFSE made a statement about it as I understand the majority (if not all) were classified employees.  Such a horrible situation for our colleagues and loved ones in Longview.  If you happen to know anyone affected, please reach out.

I also wanted to share some positive news. Matt Jorgensen (Music Tech) and Jason Devore contributed to three animated spots for Cascade Public Television, with Matt on music and Jason on sound design – the second spot also features Jeff Kashiwa on the sax. They already won a Telly Award for their work, and just this weekend, they also won a regional Emmy! Stay tuned for a press release!

Cheers,

Jack

Hopelink Mobile Market Coming to Campus

Starting Tuesday, June 2, Hopelink, Shoreline’s largest food bank and human services agency, will be bringing their Mobile Market food truck to campus. Unlike the food trucks that park in front of the PUB, Hopelink’s truck will offer groceries (produce, meat, uncooked grains, etc.), which will be free of charge and available to any Shoreline College student, staff person, or faculty member as well as any community member.

The Mobile Market will be located in the student parking lot by 1400 building on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. For now, they’ll be in service from 1 – 2 pm, with the possibility of expanded hours later this year.

White Commencement Cords

Graduates wearing white cords at Commencement are recipients of scholarships from the Shoreline College Foundation. These scholars earned this honor by pursuing their educational goals with exemplary resilience and dedication. These cords also serve as a testament to the generosity of Foundation donors on campus and in the community whose contributions empower students to achieve their dreams.

Welcoming New Shoreline College Alumni!

Every graduate at this month’s Commencement ceremony is entering the broader family of Shoreline College Alumni. The official Shoreline College Alumni Network is a great way for graduates to stay engaged with the friends and classmates, receive updates about what’s happening on campus, build networks and career opportunities, and find ways to support current and future students through mentorship, community activities, and donations. Please encourage your graduates to stay part of the Phin Family by signing up for the Shoreline College Alumni Network.
