The Center for Equity and Engagement (CEE), Campus Diversity Action Committee (CDAC) and the SCC Ray W. Howard Library invite you to join the Spring 2014 Community Read of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks written by Rebecca Skloot. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tells a riveting story about the life of Henrietta Lacks and her family and the “untold story of how her cells were taken without her knowledge and have become one the most important tools in medicine.”
The book addresses issues related to family, race/ethnicity, gender, civil rights, economics, public health, medicine, research and ethics. Individuals who participate in the book conversation will have the opportunity to share their personal awareness and experiences, learning, and epiphanies. You will also have the opportunity to engage with SCC members and build community.
Members of Henrietta Lacks’ family will talk about the book and their experiences at a FREE event sponsored by Edmonds Community College on April 23, at 7 p.m. in the EdCC’s Black Box campus theatre. Please contact Yvonne Terrell-Powell at (x4509) or yterrell@shoreline.edu for more information about the Community Read.
Books will be available at the SCC bookstore beginning March 31. Individuals may also want to check out the book at their local library or purchase it online. The library has donated 5 books to support the community read. In addition, the SCC Foundation has donated 13 books to support the program. These books are FREE to students who want to participate in the Community Read and write a reflective piece (poems, journal, song, paper, etc.) and/or complete a course assignment. There also may be a possibility for classified staff to use professional development funds to purchase this book. Please see your Professional Development representative.
The group will meet on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. in room 9202.
