Open forums for VP finalists set

The transition plan set in motion this past spring to fill the job of Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at Shoreline Community College is getting closer to completion.

Three finalists identified by a search committee are scheduled to participate in on-campus open forums during the week of Sept. 29. The finalists and their open-forum dates are:

  • Peter Lortz, Monday, Sept. 29
  • Rebecca Kenney, Thursday, Oct. 2
  • James Collins, Friday, Oct. 3

Each open forum will run from 2-3 p.m. and take place in the PUB Main Dining Room. Each candidate will have the first 20 minutes of the forum to respond to questions that have been suggested by campus community members through an online survey. The remaining 40 minutes will be available for answering questions from those attending the forums or other comments by the candidates.

Lortz is Dean of Math and Science at North Seattle College, a position he’s held since 2007. He earned a Master’s degree in zoology from Miami University, Miami, Ohio.

Kenney was Vice President of Instruction at Renton Technical College through June, 2014. She holds a Doctorate of Education from Oregon State University.

Collins is Assistant Vice Chancellor at the University of California, Merced, a position he’s been in since 2008. He earned a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Fielding Graduate University.

Bob Francis is currently filling the duties as Acting Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. Francis took over in June from Alison Stevens who accepted a position at Everett Community College. Francis has been a professor of economics and served as a dean at Shoreline. He has said he intends to return to the classroom once a permanent vice president has been chosen.

The process to find a permanent replacement began in May, 2014, when the search committee was established and the job description posted. Much of the application and screening work occurred over the summer, but the finalist forums and a final decision were put off until fall quarter when faculty and staff, along with new President Cheryl Roberts, would be available to participate.
