Tutoring services are available

Lindsay Cael is the new Manager of Tutoring Services and Tech Prep.

“I’m excited to be here and looking forward to getting to know you and learning all about how Shoreline operates,” Cael said. “For several years, I managed the ESL, GED and ABE Division at Seattle Central College.  Prior to that, I worked at the King County Jail and taught basic-education classes as well as coordinated a volunteer tutoring program.  I also have experience in crisis counseling, student advising and working with community partners.”

The tutoring-services program offers the opportunity for all transfer, professional/technical, ESL, ABE and GED students to get a tutor for up to two hours a week for each class they are taking.  If a student is registered with the Office of Special Services (OSS), they may qualify for extra tutoring time.  The tutoring offices are in rooms 5216 and 5217. Requests are now being accepted for student tutoring. Requests need to include a copy of the student’s fall 2014 class schedule.

“We are also accepting applications for paid student-tutor positions,” Cael said.”If a student wants to be a tutor, they need to have received a 3.5 or higher GPA in the course(s) to be tutored. Tutor applicants need to bring college transcripts. Please encourage your qualified students to stop by and apply.”

Once student-tutor matches are made, the tutoring staff (Amy, Matt, Gene and Ken) will send an e-mail to the student and tutor to confirm the pairing. At that point, the tutor and student coordinate schedules and start tutoring.  Students that have applied for a tutor and are under OSS should have received an e-mail on Sept. 24 about a tutor match.  All other students should expect to receive an e-mail on Oct. 6 with match information.

“Our office also coordinates tutors for the Bio/Chem Learning Center, Room 2717, for students that want drop-in help,” Cael said, adding that the Center will be available from 9 .m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday, starting Sept. 29.
