Masking Voluntary (Indoor & Outdoor) Effective April 2nd Forward

Dear Campus Community,
I am sharing with you today the College’s decision to lift the mask requirement effective April 2, 2022, in time for the start of spring quarter.
This decision was informed by many sources including:
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Guidance for Institutions of Higher Education
- The Washington State Department of Health’s COVID-19 Recommendations for Higher Education
- Input from over 600 college respondents to the mask survey in which feedback was almost perfectly split
- Feedback from the Communicable Disease Team
Additionally, please note the following regarding this change in masking requirements:
- Masks will continue to be required in clinical and other health-care settings and on College shuttles/vans.
- Use of well-fitting masks may be temporarily required or recommended by the College (e.g., days 6-10 if returning to work from isolation after day 5, during a COVID-19 outbreak, when community levels are high, etc.).
- Individual staff members or instructors cannot require others to mask in their departments or classrooms.
- If you voluntarily choose to mask up, choose a well-fitted, high-quality mask — such as a KN95, N95, or surgical mask — which when worn correctly can protect you as well as those around you. You can pick up masks at ASK ME stations in the 1000, 4000, and 5000 buildings or from your ET or Student Learning, Equity, Success (SLES) member.
- Individuals who are immunocompromised or live with someone who is at risk for severe COVID-19 should consider wearing well-fitting masks when community levels are medium or higher, per the Washington State Department of Health. Current community level in King County is identified by the CDC as low.
- The College recommends respiratory etiquette.
- The College’s masking decision may change in the future, should conditions change.
Other items to keep in mind as we move forward:
- Individual areas or employees cannot require others to mask in their areas, offices, or classrooms.
- The College will continue to promote/support hand hygiene by supplying hand sanitizer and wipes to employees, as requested.
- Wipe and hand sanitizer dispensers will remain in current locations throughout the campus.
- The College will continue to maintain indoor air quality through the use MERV13 air filters.
- The College will continue to clean high-touch surfaces across campus daily as well as offices in use by on-campus employees.
- Employees should continue to work with Human Resources (HR) regarding any accommodation requested.
- Installed plexiglass will remain in use across campus.
- Vaccination verification or eligible exemption status will continue to be required for all employees and on-campus students.
Individuals should continue to report any COVID-19 symptoms or exposures via the online reporting tool for direction on health and safety steps needed.
I truly appreciate your ongoing commitment to the health and well-being of our students and the college community. Please extend to each other grace and respect as we work through these important conversations.

RETURN TO CAMPUS/COVID-19
Cases
- Zero new positive cases were reported in the last 7 days.
- Consider using WA Notify (also known as Washington Exposure Notifications), a free tool that works on smartphones to alert users if they may have been exposed to COVID-19 without sharing any personal information. It is completely private and does not know who you are or track where you go.
- Care Connect Washington offers food, personal care kits, and financial assistance to people who need to isolate or quarantine due to COVID-19. Care coordination services make it easier for people to stay home to help slow the spread of the illness. Call 1-800-525-0127, then press #.
Vaccines
- For spring quarter, students new to taking hybrid or in-person classes or those with prior holds on their accounts need to attest to their vaccination status or an eligible exemption by April 17, 2022. Holds will be put onto accounts of students who have not done so. Students taking classes entirely online are not required to attest to their vaccination status.
- If you need a ride to your vaccination appointment, visit Find A Ride or call the Transportation Resources Line at 425-943-6760 (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Dial 5 for interpretation).
For spring quarter 2022 planning:
- As part of our phased reopening of campus plan, ~50% of classes are scheduled to have an in-person component for spring.
- Campus operating hours:
- Monday-Thursdays 8 am-5 pm: all services will be available in person, as well as online.
- Fridays 8am – 4:30 pm: all services will be available online. Some services will be offered in person as well, as approved.
- Employee work schedules:
- Classified and administrative exempt staff will work on campus a minimum of 3 days/week during Monday-Thursday (or during Monday-Friday, if approved).
- Faculty librarians, counselors, and advisors will work on campus a minimum of 2-3 days/week during Monday-Thursday (or during Monday-Friday, if approved).
- Based on feedback from faculty (to their division dean) regarding their planned spring use of offices, specific faculty offices will be maintained and cleaned daily throughout the quarter. Faculty may meet with students one-on-one or for office hours either in faculty offices or online. Faculty, please update your dean if you have a planned regular (multiple times per week) use of your office during spring quarter.
- Parking on campus remains free for spring quarter; no permits will be required but hazardous/illegal parking will accrue fines.
- Faculty, staff, and students will be able to travel domestically for conferences, professional development, and other business needs, as budgets allow. Follow CDC guidelines on domestic travel. International travel will be subject to review on a case-by-case basis, informed by CDC requirements and recommendations.
- Indoor masking: thank you to the 639 students and employees who responded so thoughtfully to the masking requirements survey. Executive Team is still in the process of reviewing that extensive feedback, as well as benchmarking ourselves with sister colleges. Many nearby colleges have yet to make a decision about indoor masking for their spring quarters. We hope to share a decision very soon.
