Campus Updates 7/27/23

Events and News

Good afternoon folks—I hope you’re all doing well.  This past week has involved a lot of catching up with colleagues on campus, planning, and discussing next steps for a wide variety of SCC projects.

One of most significant events of this week was our first meeting with the Latino Educational Training Institute from Lynwood.  Samira Pardanani, Alejandra Salgado, Jonathan Molinaro, Henry Garcia, and I met their President & the Director of Health & Wellness programs.  We gave a brief tour of the campus (thankfully Samira is not as directionally challenged as I am) and then had a brief conversation about ways in which we might partner to better serve our diverse LatinX/Hispanic community. It was an excellent first meeting, and I expect some great things in the future.

Today Aisha Hauser and I had a meeting with two new colleagues from the Muckleshoot tribe- Dr. Denise Bill, Executive Director of Adult & Higher Education & Madrienne White, Tribal College Administrator. The discussion was a first step in getting ideas and input from tribal representatives on our Capital projects and land naming projects.  I think I can speak for all of us when I say we learned a lot and are looking forward to our next meeting to get to know one another, share our visions for education, and determine if there is interest in working with us on various projects. More to come!

Finally, yesterday I was fortunate to meet with Bo Fu and Samira Pardanani to do a “ZOOM MOU” with representatives of the Sanhe City Yanqiao School in China.  This is a new partnership with a high school in China where students will begin their early college coursework with Shoreline CC!  A huge thanks to Bo for coordinating this new partnership and bringing it to fruition.

That’s it for now- I’m way behind on email so if I owe you one—it’s coming!  Have a great weekend.

Best,

Jack

Accreditation and Budget

  • Area Reviews inform how the College will allocate resources for the 2023-24 fiscal year.
  • The next step in the process is for Executive Team members to prioritize budget requests, as articulated in the Area Reviews, for their areas taking into account the priorities articulated by the prior-level budget manager.

Foundation and Advancement

Need help helping students? Here are two resources available through the Foundation:

1) Emergency Fund – Financial assistance is available to Shoreline Community College students who are dealing with financial hardship resulting from an emergency, accident, or other unexpected critical incident that has a direct impact on their academic success at Shoreline. https://shorelineemergency.awardspring.com/

2) Scholarships – The Foundation has awarded thousands of academic and workforce scholarships to Shoreline students. In addition to federal and state financial aid, scholarships are a great way to offset all or part of the cost of an education. https://www.shoreline.edu/foundation/scholarships.aspx

Want to help students in other ways? Consider making a gift to the Foundation. As an employee, you can make a gift through payroll deduction, or through the website: https://www.shoreline.edu/foundation/giving.aspx.
