Campus Updates 8/18/23

Events and News

Good afternoon folks—hope all is well!

This last week was very busy! I spent several meetings with folks pouring over budget and program reviews looking through requests etc. that have come in through our review process. A huge thank you to Becca Chen and the members of the Budget team for all of their work getting the budget in order and walking us through this process. We will be presenting some preliminary information to the Board next week on this process- I am looking forward to sharing the results with our community.

This past week, Wendy Coates, and two of our board members (Rebecca Chan and Kim Wells) joined me in meeting with a representative of the Seattle Foundation as well as newly appointed chancellor Rosie Rimando-Chareunsap to discuss the history of the Seattle Promise. We are learning more about how the Promise has had a major positive impact on Seattle as a community and will be discussing throughout the year whether this is something that could work at SCC as well. More soon!

I also wanted to highlight a blog post about Mary’s Place (that you can see listed in Events and Updates below) as they did a nice story on our new partnership with them this week. Thanks to Karen Bretz, Taraji Belgacem, Paprika Fahrenwald, and Kelly Williams (new ESL faculty) for helping get this partnership together and piloted this summer. We plan to keep this going in fall, winter, and spring. We’re also in talks with Compass Housing Alliance about doing ESL classes at their Shoreline location in coordination with Hopelink, so I’ll keep you posted on that!

This week I wanted to send a shoutout to Douglas Haub and Terrell Fox. Many people don’t know all the great work they do behind the scenes to support so many people. They provide so many creative solutions, and so much support behind the scenes that I just wanted to share that with campus- we see you both, and we appreciate you!

Finally I wanted to share that last weekend I was able to visit the Walla Walla area for the first time. We had a great time, enjoyed the wineries and some great food. But let me tell you something. There was NO onion propaganda to be seen anywhere. No stands, no posters, no silly onion cartoons. Come on people! We were told with the focus on wineries that the onion has lost its special place. They can of course still be found at Albertsons etc. So, if you were wondering why I didn’t bring you any onions this week, this is why!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Best, Jack

Communications and Marketing

Hi everyone! I have a couple of updates and reminders for you this week. The first is that I am going to be out of the country on vacation for the next two weeks starting this weekend. I will return the day after Labor Day on the 5th. While I am away Damon Logan dlogan@shoreline.edu will be handling DAAG and ST requests as well as managing the college calendar. If you have any questions please send them his way, and if you’d like to submit something for DAAG or ST, please do so via the calendar request which can be found here.

Secondly, I want to remind everyone that if you would like to request a website update or addition, please do so using the web request form. When you do it please make sure you include the link for the page you are looking to fix and adding a screenshot is also incredibly helpful. Those requests go directly to Damon and by entering them into the ticketing system it helps us track and respond to them better.

Thank you and I’ll see you in two weeks! 😊 -Cat

TSS

We are continuing to work with the State to reestablish our database connection with ctcLink information which we use to feed into our systems including the campus directory. While we work through that project, we want to share a temporary solution with you.

This spreadsheet contains directory information as it was prior to March 20, 2023. It may not be 100% accurate in terms of phone numbers, but it is a start. As we continue to roll out our new phone system, those phone numbers will be automatically updated within the spreadsheet for improved accuracy.

Please note that this temporary directory is automatically updated every Sunday, so if an employee is new, they might not be viewable immediately until that weekly update occurs.

We will continue to provide updates as we receive them.

Foundation and Advancement

Scholarship Reviewers Needed! Reviewing student scholarship applications is inspiring, fulfilling, and rewarding! The process is done online anytime during the review period (August 21 – Sept 6). We will supply you with instructions, scoring rubric, and any other assistance you may need. Each application is scored by 2 or 3 reviewers (depending on how many volunteers sign up), and it takes 3 – 5 hours to complete. Please don’t feel the need to do them all at one time, you can break it up however you want during the review period.

Be part of this meaningful work by emailing Josh ( jkrupke@shoreline.edu) today!
