Campus Updates 8/24/23

Events and News

Good afternoon, all!

Once again, I hope you are all doing well. This was another week filled with meetings dedicated to budget planning.

It has been challenging, given our limited resources and the number of requests received. I do think though, that we have developed a process that will honor a collaborative and transparent approach with a focus on prioritization and future planning. We will do even better next year. You may have attended yesterday’s (August 23, 2023) Board of Trustees meeting where we presented the DRAFT budget to the trustees. This, of course, was a “higher level” presentation.

During Opening Week, we will share information with the campus about the specifics (e.g., innovation grant list, etc.) surrounding the College’s 2023-2024 operating budget.

A highlight this week was meeting with my colleague Kunchok Gonpo, the president of the Tibetan Association of Washington (TAW). We are excited that the TAW will be offering language and culture classes to the Tibetan community every Sunday, right here at Shoreline Community College! Thank you to Suzanne Gugger, Assistant Director (Continuing Education, Facility Rentals & Events) for all her work on this! We are also collaborating on other possibilities with the TAW and are planning to connect President Gonpo’s team with campus folks in the fall.

Other than that, not much to report on a personal front. I spent all last weekend on Shoreline CC related work so have less fun stuff to report! I did, however, have a fun ZOOM catch-up with a Community College President friend from California. Always fun to share similarities and differences across colleges. We also managed to talk about non-work- related stuff—which is sometimes a challenge for us.

Hope your weekend is relaxing and energizing as well.

Best,

Jack

Foundation and Advancement

Scholarship Reviewers Needed! Reviewing student scholarship applications is inspiring, fulfilling, and rewarding! The review and scoring process happens online and can take place at any time during the review period (August 21 – Sept 6). We will supply you with instructions, scoring rubric, and any other assistance you may need. Each application, scored by 2 or 3 reviewers (depending on the number of volunteers signed up), takes 3 – 5 hours to complete. Please do not feel the need to do them all at one time as you can break it up however you want during the review period.

Be part of this meaningful work by emailing Josh Krupke (jkrupke@shoreline.edu) today!
