Events and News

Good evening folks- hope everyone is doing well. This past week has been pretty packed

I imagine by now you have heard about this great Flamenco event we are hosting at Shoreline. We had a great planning meeting on Friday, and I wanted to be sure and let people know– The Honorary Consul of Spain, Luis F. Esteban, together has brought us this special concert with Rafael Ramírez and his group! He was the winner of the “Breakout Artist Award” in Flamenco Jerez Festival 2023. The concert will take place on October 22nd at Shoreline Community College Theater, at 3 p.m. Hope you can join us! Bring a friend! We will be offering special rates for students and Shoreline employees. Get tickets here.

This week I am at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education conference with our ED of Foundation & Advancement Wendy Coates & Foundation rep Josh Krupke learning about how to improve our strategies to work with our communities to raise additional funding to support students!  It has been great so far, and I can’t wait to implement some of the ideas.

Thank you again to faculty and staff who are beginning to propose additional ideas that fit with the work I mentioned during Opening Week.  Our charge isn’t just about focusing on underrepresented prospective students, but challenging the ways we serve them and support their goals. I described this as largely reactive and individualistic, where the focus is on waiting for folks to come to us and supporting them one at a time, often in silos.

My challenge to the campus is not to do something new, but to do more of the creative work that is already happening at SCC.  I have seen many approaches that are proactive, serve groups/communities, and are systemic, action-oriented and aligned with our mission.

One example I mentioned during opening week is a wonderful project coordinated by Michael Boehm, Suzanne Gugger, Gury Dorje and our awesome auto faculty Amber Avery-Graff and Rashawn Smith. The project involves creating an introductory continuing education class in automotive (lube technician), gathering a group of students together through CECO & BFET (who paid for their tuition), enrolling, and supporting them in this class and connecting the class to our 2-year program. After the first round of this pilot, half of the students decided to apply for our two-year program on campus – Its simply brilliant! If you need help brainstorming ways to do this on the enrollment, retention, or completion side- let’s talk!

Hope you have a fantastic week!

Best,

Jack

The Giving Table: SCCF Annual Fundraising Luncheon

The SCCF annual fundraising luncheon happens on November 3! This year’s event will focus on how donors impact the students and programs at SCC. Unlike in past years, there will be no cost to attend the event. Guests will be asked to consider making a gift of $200 (or an amount that is meaningful for them) during the event. If you would like to help or want to know more about filling up a table of people, let Wendy know!

Giving Table – Table Captains:

We are seeking volunteers to host tables. This means you would invite people you know professionally (or personally) who you think would be excited about giving a gift in support of SCC Students and programs, you help them register, and let them know any details (how to park etc.), and on the day of the event you act as the Foundation’s representative at the table! Don’t worry, it’s not hard, in fact it’s fun! We’ll even have a handbook that will help you know what to do and when. Let Wendy know if you are interested!

Giving Table – Sponsors

Sponsorship is a critical component of any fundraising event. Sponsors, individuals, and businesses, provide funds for promotional consideration on our website, social media, printed collateral, etc. Event sponsors help to defray the cost of the event so that every dollar raised will support SCC students and programs! If you want to be a sponsor, or know someone who could be a sponsor, click here for more info.

Shout out to the sponsors who have already committed to helping! Click here to see who they are! And if you know or shop with them, give them a big “thank you”!
