Good morning, and welcome back! While the weather and wind hasn’t been super welcoming (though in fairness it is wintertime!), the warmth and energy coming from our students, faculty and staff teams is keeping us going!
To start your year off with a bang, I really want to tell you what enrollments look like so far, but I don’t want to ruin Ann’s fun below—I would STRONGLY suggest you scroll down in her report, even after add/drop and “ghost removal.”
The student leadership team has done a great job welcoming students with pastries, coffee, and lots of fun events (I see them advertised on Instagram and in Shoreline Today quite often). I was able to connect with students this week at an Ask Me table on Monday and Tuesday, and on Wednesday at a new event we are trying called “Pizza with the President” I think alliteration is required as a previous institution had “Donuts with the Deans” (Deans take notice!). It was fun, and I chatted with many students and even a few staff colleagues!
This week I attended a couple of meetings for the WACTC legislative affairs subcommittee. It is a new committee for me and it’s providing a lot of great learning. I hope to improve my skills and advocacy for our staff and students.
This Monday of course is MLK day. Last year I shared a story about growing up in Arizona which was the last state to adopt the holiday. Taking part in protests to adopt the holiday next to those protesting against it is definitely a memory I won’t forget.
I hope the day provides time for reflection on the legacy and wisdom of Martin Luther King Jr. I know for me as a young man learning about King’s approach to nonviolence (alongside Gandhi’s) was incredibly important in my own development and learning as a college student. I was very lucky to have a roommate (and mentor) who competed with me for consuming important books outside of our course syllabi. King’s words resonated in a way that provided an alternative way to acknowledge and confront injustices and to view social change that was very unfamiliar to me as an 18-year-old.
As you know, we are committed to the vision he believed in, and we will work together to raise each other up in times when we see replications of the same kinds of violence Dr King (and of course many others) spoke of sixty+ years ago. In fact, this month we will be hosting a very important event in this spirit.
On Tuesday January 30, 2024, with the City of Shoreline, we will host the Edwin Pratt Day of Remembrance Reception from 5–7 in the Main Dining Room. At the reception, we will honor and celebrate the life of local civil rights leader Edwin Pratt. Wendy in the Foundation office is looking for volunteers, so please reach out to her if you want to help.

- February 1: Mid-Cycle Accreditation report DRAFT due to our NWCCU Liaison for feedback.

- February 23: Mock Accreditation Visit – stay tuned for schedule and preparatory materials.

Save the Date: Edwin Pratt Day of Remembrance Reception – January 30, 2024
5:00-7:00 pm (PUB) Main Dining Room
Join city and community leaders in the PUB Main Dining Room on January 30 at 5:00 pm as the City of Shoreline proclaims January 30th as the Edwin Pratt Day of Remembrance, celebrating the life of local civil rights leader Edwin Pratt (1930-1969). Before his tragic assassination in 1969, Pratt served as the Executive Director of the Seattle Urban League. He worked tirelessly on the desegregation of Seattle Public Schools, fair housing initiatives, and other critical advancements in civil rights. Applications for student emergency assistance grants are now being processed by the Benefits Hub. If you are aware of a student in urgent need of support, please refer them to the Benefits Hub and have them fill out an Emergency Aid application.
