Campus Updates 1/18/24

Events and News

Hello! I hope you are all doing well. This week has been slammed with meetings, with a disproportionate number of them focused on moving the strategic plan forward.  They have been great, and I am learning a lot from listening to folks discuss different areas for improvement and growth.

Of course, the weather has been a challenge this week – not too bad in Shoreline proper but some of our surrounding areas have had more icy conditions etc. I commute in from up north and it wasn’t so bad the last couple of days- not as terrible as last year (so far!).

We had a really exciting meeting yesterday with Eileen Aparis, Senior Vice President of Mission at Goodwill Industries, and Chancellor Rosie Rimando Chareunsap, from the Seattle Community College District. We did a brief tour of the Cedar building and discussed some next steps around connecting workforce training at Goodwill more explicitly with King County Colleges for Credit for Prior Learning credit and integration of programming. Thanks to our local experts Lucas Rucks, Dalila Paredes, and Wendy Coates for assisting in this conversation. More on this soon!

This week I also want to include January’s Campus Update from the President’s Office. Thank you to Rob Berg and Ann Garnsey-Harter for helping with it.

So, as part of my list of New Year’s resolutions I am getting back into fitness etc. I am on a program of weightlifting and cardio, and next month will be (gulp…pun intended) doing a food cleanse of sorts. And people, it isn’t easy. I am out of shape but in the last month have noticed some meager changes in overall strength which is great. If others are doing similar things let me know and I’m glad to cheer each other on- it’s always humbling to do something that is personally challenging.

Stay safe and warm!

Best,

Jack

Foundation

Hi everyone – We are thrilled to be partnering with the City of Shoreline in honoring Mr. Pratt’s legacy. The event is shaping up quite well, but we could use a few more volunteers to help us set up and check in guests. Let Wendy know if you would like to help wcoates@shoreline.edu  January 30, 2024, from 5-7 in the PUB. Refreshments (from Shorecrest High School) will be provided.

Emergency Aid for Students: If you know of a student who needs assistance, please ask them to fill out the Student Emergency Aid Information and Application .

Technology Support Services

Emergency 911 calling is enabled in the new MS Teams Voice-Over-IP (VOIP) phone system; however, please be aware that the college’s 16101 Greenwood Avenue North physical address is associated with your Shoreline CC phone number. This means, if you are calling 911 from an off-campus location using the MS Teams VOIP system, the 911 operator will see the college’s address, not your actual off-campus location. Please alert the 911 operator of your actual physical location if you use the MS Teams VOIP phone system to place an emergency 911 call.
