Events and News 

This Saturday I attended the Latino educational Training Institute 2024 kick off. This included a nod to all the students in their leadership programs (they have programs now at Edmonds and Skagit for example), words from state representatives, and a great Chicano Studies presentation documenting the history of LatinX/Hispanic influence in the state of Washington. SCC is working with LETI now to add ESL courses to help support some of their constituents. I’m hoping we can explore one of the leadership programs as well. I was very involved with supporting Puente and MEChA at previous colleges and LETIs model is one we could investigate! 

I was pleased to be able to volunteer for desk duty this week at the library.  I got to hang out with Mary Blanchett and a few students who trained me on several items (computer check-in and return, photocopies, etc.).  It was great to spend the time with them and learn about how our operations work.  Sometimes things got a bit interesting when I had to tell a few patrons to please be patient with me as it was my “first day” (I did not reveal my secret identity). 😉 

In terms of meetings, this week was spent in several involving the strategic plan, to assist getting everything in the best shape for the draft info to go the Board for Wednesday’s meeting.  I also attended the WACTC legislative affairs update, which was helpful for many reasons. 

Two items coming up at the end of the week include a meeting with the embassy of El Salvador in Washington DC (Coordinator) National Directorate of Medicines (DNM) Ministry of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador International Cooperation Agency to discuss possible partnerships, and the “Hill Climb” event in Olympia with a couple of students and Trustee Ringer.  More info to come!

Winter Quarter Updates 

Accreditation 

  • March 1: Area Reviews due. 
  • January 22-26: finish the Equity section. 
  • Friday, February 23: Mock Accreditation Visit – read about our mock evaluators.  
  • If you see old Core Theme posters around campus, please take them down. We no longer use core themes as part of our accreditation process. 
     

Enrollment  
Good news; we are serving more students!  

  • The Daily Enrollment Report shows a 7% increase as compared to last year. 
  • The 10th day enrollment report shows that this is the first winter enrollment increase in five years.  
  • We now have seen this enrollment trend reversal for the last 4 quarters (spring 2023, summer 2023, fall 2023, winter 2024).

Foundation 

Edwin T. Pratt Day of Remembrance – Tuesday, January 30th at 5:00 pm 

Join us in the PUB Main Dining Room as the City of Shoreline proclaims January 30th as the Edwin Pratt Day of Remembrance, celebrating the life and legacy of local civil rights leader Edwin Pratt (1930-1969). Before his tragic assassination in 1969, Mr. Pratt served as the Executive Director of the Seattle Urban League. He worked tirelessly on the desegregation of Seattle Public Schools, fair housing initiatives, and other critical advancements in civil rights. There is no charge to attend, and refreshments will be served by the students from Shorecrest Culinary Arts and North City Bistro. Visit the Edwin T. Volunteers Needed! 

  1. Volunteers are needed to assist Facilities and Foundation staff in setting up the Main Dining Room for the Edwin T. Pratt event on January 30. There will be an event in the room until 4:00 pm, and the Edwin Pratt event begins at 5:00 pm. Students and Staff are welcome to sign up to volunteer and stay for the event. Food will be available as part of the event.  
  1. You can transform the life of a student by joining the scholarship committee. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the challenges and triumphs of SCC students and provide practical assistance to those in need. Let Wendy know if you want to participate wcoates@shoreline.edu.

Spring Quarter Scholarship applications will open Feb 1 – Feb 28  
Annual Scholarship applications will open Feb 1 – Mar 29

Student Emergency Aid  
Applications for student emergency assistance grants are now being processed by the Benefits Hub. If you are aware of a student in urgent need of support, please refer them to the Benefits Hub and have them fill out an Emergency Aid application. 

Technology Support Services (TSS) 

The TSS department has completed the college-wide conversion to the new Microsoft Teams VOIP system. Faculty and Staff with active Shoreline CC phone numbers should be able to send and receive calls within the new Teams phone system. ACTION REQUESTED: If you have a Shoreline CC phone number, please check to ensure that your MS Teams VOIP was properly ported and verify that your work number is correct. You can check for an active line and verify your work number by: 

  1. Opening your MS Teams application,  
  2. Go to the “Calls” tab on the left,  
  3. You should see a numeric keypad with your active work number underneath it.  
  4. If your active work number is correct, please refrain from using your old desktop phone if you still have one and use the new MS Teams system for your calling needs.  
  5. If you do not see the 10-digit numeric keypad or the active work number is not correct, please contact TSS to have this corrected.
