Events and News
Hello folks! I hope you are doing well! I am writing from Washington, D.C., participating in the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) National Legislative Summit with Board Chair & Trustee Rebecca Chan and Trustee James Stark. Community College representatives from across the country are here to meet with members of the U.S. Congress and/or their staff to advocate for students and community colleges. It has been a wonderful experience to connect with presidents, trustees, and students, as well as learn more about their colleges and the great work being done to serve students and our communities.

A team of us from Washington first met with Senator Murray. She was extremely busy but spent some time thanking us for coming and describing some of the projects she was working on. She emphasized her support of community colleges and all that we do. She also mentioned that she once taught at Shoreline Community College! And yes, after she mentioned that, Trustee Chan and I did cheer! After her presentation, her aide Abby Laver sat with our team and engaged in the conversation. Students from some of our sister colleges began the conversation discussing some of their challenges including food insecurity, childcare, and financial aid. The focus was on expanding the PELL for short-time programs, helping with the delayed FAFSA roll out, assistance with workforce programs, and other topics. We also had a great team meeting with King County folks from the Seattle district, and we met with Representative Pramila Jayapal. She was amazing. She sat with us for about twenty minutes and discussed similar topics, and some of the roadblocks she (and some of her other colleagues) have been struggling with recently. She was very open and warm to us, and it was really wonderful to know she is on our side! Her aide Michael Bauduy was really great as well. I’m so glad we strengthened these relationships.
It has been a great conference but I’m ready to return to Shoreline. I will be recording the February monthly update video with a special guest! Get ready! Hope you had a great week.
Cheers,
Jack
