Campus Updates 2/16/24

Events and News 

Hli all, hope you are well.  I am back from DC and having a more “regular” week filled with meetings, and a lot of catch-up.  I spent some time reading the draft accreditation report feedback from Dr Ed Harii (which was very useful)- see update below. 

One thing I was not able to attend (and was very discouraged that I couldn’t) was the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women event sponsored by the Multicultural Center.  Dr Johnson attended in my stead – I heard from many that It was really moving.  Savena Garrett was kind enough to summarize it for me, “Dr. J shared a beautiful message with the folks that were present. Our student, Javi Santana, from the Multicultural Center put in a lot of effort to make sure this rally took place.  He was a star!  I was so inspired and touched by his passion and commitment for his brothers, sisters, family and other students who are a part of our indigenous community.  His message was powerful, and his voice was heard by all of us.”  We are so fortunate to have students like this, and a big thank you to our multicultural center team for bringing this to our campus and advocating for indigenous peoples. 

Last but not least, did you get to the Lunar New Year celebration put on by the WAVES center?  It was amazing!  Our students from the SCC Chinese Club did a wonderful dragon dance, we learned about Chinese calligraphy, had wonderful food, and celebrated all afternoon.  I unfortunately missed the singing performance by Jo-Wei Wu but heard it was lovely.  My favorite part weas the Dragon performance by the Seattle Mak Fai Lion Dance Association was so much fun!  It was really well done, engaging and celebratory.

Business & Administrative Services – Risk Management  

Please take a few minutes to complete a short safety survey with questions about workplace safety!  Each year, the DES State Office of Risk Management, together with the State Agency Safety Professionals Alliance (SASPA), administers the safety survey. The 2024 Safety Survey will be open to all employees through this Sunday, 2/18/2024.   

Because many employees are now teleworking on a permanent basis, to some degree, the first question of this year’s survey allows employees to choose their current work environment from six options.  This will allow employees to answer survey questions that are only pertinent to their work environment. The six options are:  

1. working from home 100%  

2. working in the field 100%*  

3. working in the office 100%  

4. hybrid home and office  

5. hybrid home and field*  

6. hybrid field and office*  

*Field is any work environment that is not a home or conventional office, for example, instructional clinical locations.  

The intent of the survey is to enhance our culture of worker safety. State agencies use survey results to develop a safety action plan for addressing the issues identified.  Survey information will help the Office of Risk Management (Joe Mazur) evaluate our current safety program, identify gaps, and plan safety initiatives to enhance employee workplace safety.  

The 2024 Safety Survey is anonymous.  Results will be collected by the DES State Office of Risk Management, then tallied and sent in summary form to each state agency. Thank you for your participation, and please let Joe Mazur know if you have any questions.
