Hey there all, hope you are having a good week.

At the end of last week, I attended the All-Washington Academic Team event with Trustee Ringer.  The event was wonderful. Shoreline Community College had four students participate, and two of our students were in the top 16 students across the state! Below you can see a picture of these two very impressive students: Isabella Perez Briones and Joshua Fox. Governor Inslee did an inspirational presentation too!

This week has been really full with VP of DEIA interviews and of course prepping for the big Cedar event (more on that below!)

Last week the Board also recognized our very own Lori Yonemitsu as an excellent Executive Assistant.  This is true, and she is also a pretty excellent human being.  Please thank all our awesome assistants across campus when you see them- it’s a tough job (especially for Lori who has a zany boss ;-).

I also wanted to update you about the plan for legislative advocacy. In preparation for the community college presidents and boards legislative work next year, the State Board sent a survey (with three sections- underlined below) to share with colleges to rank order priorities.  While ALL items are important, the strategic priority is to narrow and unite across the state for impact.  Also, we will still be focusing on the other items listed, just not necessarily with a legislative advocacy focus in those areas if that makes sense. 

I shared this survey with the College Council (our representative body) and the Board of Trustees and submitted their recommendations with one caveat.  Information as an update is here for your review. This is OUR submission- I will update you when I have the state’s results (tallied from all our votes).

 My reply to College Council:

Thank you to those of you who provided feedback and recommendations as to our legislative priorities.  As a representative body of the college this is very important and appreciated.  In the spirit of transparent communication and rationale, I want to provide you with what the results are and one change I am making (and why).

With a focus on students, (and a student-centered approach as a value in our strategic plan) the priority #1 makes good sense.  However, due to our focus on DEI in our strategic plan, mission and values, my concern is that without that specific designation in legislated funding we will not have the necessary early emphasis needed to address equity gaps across the college.  DEI funding also has a positive impact on several of the other categories as well.    I kept compensation in the top three as this is crucial in keeping the institution moving forward.

Finally, I wanted to thank EVERYONE involved with the planning and organizing of the Cedar Building Grand Opening. From the student volunteers to our staff and incredible faculty! So many community members were thrilled at the engagement on campus- thank you ALL for all you do.  We are excited to share pictures and video footage of the event with you in the future.

Two updates to share:

Please join me in welcoming Mr. Soroush Maleki as our new Director of Budget and Capital Finances who started in his official capacity on May 1st overseeing the budget, grants, and contracts service areas at the college. He is in Building 1200 along with the Financials Services team, Gayla Hocker, and me. As you recall from the prior email announcement, Soroush brings many years of relevant higher education work experience in California and Washington SBCTC. He previously worked at North Seattle and South Puget Sound. Welcome, Soroush!
