Hey there all—hope you are having a great week. And I have to say, it has been kind a a great week actually.
Starting with our Cedar building Grand Opening. Oh my gosh it was amazing! Having the community on campus to see the beautiful building, and all the learning opportunities our students have was so terrific. Our faculty and staff were just so inspiring in how they discussed their passionate work in the classrooms and lab spaces. Our partners from the Suquamish and Muckleshoot Tribes shared inspiring words of welcome (and even a beautiful song from our Muckleshoot colleagues). The food trucks, musicians from our band, and the kind and welcoming atmosphere our staff and admin created was just incredible. Wendy Coates, Cat Chiappa and team really did knock it out of the park—thank you to ALL the students and staff that did all the hard work and planning to set this event up. SCC really made a mark last week!

I also really enjoyed our Day of Learning. Theresa Harrington and team organized this like it was an international conference- SO well done. I enjoyed our speaker Jeff Harry and the exercises we participated in. I think his suggestions for improving retention are spot-on. I am going to begin by discussing these with ET members about what we can include in our meetings/practice and then as next steps ask them to do the same with their supervisees. Let’s see where we can go with this!
I also had the good fortune to meet with Dr Chris Villa for a lunch/hangout meeting today. Dr Villa is the President of Skagit Valley College and has some really great insights into leadership and DEI work. He shared some things Skagit Valley is doing, which I will bring back to our campus as well. They are doing really well up North with an 11% increase in enrollment and some great strategies for outreach and using data to affect progress in recruitment of underserved communities. More soon!
Finally, as I discuss in the video below, we are working hard at discussing recommended innovation grants, one-time requests, and budget adjustments for the 2024-2025 budget cycle. We are done with Innovation grants and now working on one-time funding requests and budget adjustments. I will keep you posted on progress—the overall big picture budget will be presented to the board in May so please join us to get information for that as well.
One more update! Samira Pardanani and I co-wrote a book chapter in the textbook: Narratives and Strategies of Effective Leadership in Community Colleges. Our article is called “The Evolution of a Successful International Education Program at a Community College: Harnessing Leadership to Create Meaningful Global Engagement at Shoreline Community College”. It was just released this week! It was great working with Samira on this and I am excited about having some additional positive discussion of our great International Education program out there!
