Events and News
Hey folks- hope all are doing well. It has been a busy week!
This week we hosted a wonderful groundbreaking ceremony for our new Bracken building- a building that embodies the best of what community colleges offer- career training, transfer, and inspiration! The building will house our stellar Math, Music, and Nursing programs! We were really happy to have State Representative Cindy Ryu give a brief welcome as well as Shoreline Community College trustees Rebecca Ringer & James Stark, and new Vice President of Instruction (VPI) Ben Weng. Thank you to Cat Chiappa and Wendy Coates and their teams for coordinating the event.

Did you hear Rashawn Smith won an award this past weekend from the Honda Professional Automotive Career Training (PACT)? The award is the “Challenging Spirit Award” which recognizes leaders for support and performance “exceeding Honda’s expectations in response to extraordinary requirements.” Rashawn has made major positive changes to the Auto program and has led during COVID and other College challenges. Even given those challenges, we reported the highest cert completions in the state! He’s the faculty lead for our Black Student Union (BSU) and just joined our Faculty Senate as the new vice chair. I am excited to work with him in that leadership role as well. If you see Rashawn, please congratulate him, and thank him for his inspirational leadership work for the College and especially for our students!
This week we also had a GREAT meeting with amazing leaders from King County, the City of Shoreline, the Shoreline Community College Foundation, Shoreline CC Board members and Blanton Turner (the property management firm for the student residence hall) to discuss our shared Housing Insecurity Pilot. Using funds from the county, we are fully funding housing for 3 (soon to be 4) housing-insecure students in our residence hall- right here on campus. This gives students access to wrap-around services provided by the county AND the College. We will be watching progress and hope to increase opportunities with more students soon. Keep an eye out for the press release…I’m just excited! While it’s a small step in this housing crisis, it matters. Thank you Guru Dorje and team for all your amazing work and leadership!!
I haven’t been sharing much of my weekend shenanigans lately- mostly because I have either been at events (which I do share) or I’m not doing much that is interesting! However, I had an “interesting” thing happen on Saturday last weekend that I did want to share. My wife and I were in the car going to some yard sales (we like to do that kind of thing) when we saw a dog running around in the street. A couple cars had pulled over and it was one of those “oh my gosh should we do something or do others have this handled etc.” moments. Well, as many of you know, I am a bit of a dog fanatic (as is my wife) so we pulled over also. In the next few minutes, a group of about 8 diverse people (ranging in a variety of ways) cornered the pup in a parking lot so that she couldn’t run back into the street. Somehow without knowing each other at all, we all came up with roles and a plan (“I’m calling for backup, I’ll get the backside, I will try and get her to calm down,” etc.). We were there about 20 minutes and eventually connected her with her owner (she had got out from a hole in the fence). We smiled and thanked each other and went our separate ways.
I know it’s silly to use this metaphor as some grand metaphor for the possibility of people collaborating toward a common goal or vision. But it was a powerful few moments and it reminded me of the incredible work we have done together as a community at Shoreline, and how powerful it can be when we focus, coordinate, and act in the spirit of our vision for students and each other.
Have a great weekend.
Cheers,
Jack
