Campus Updates 10/25/24

Events and News

So….in case you’ve ever wondered, jet lag is real!  I came back Monday having just returned from two weeks in China promoting the College and thought “I’ve got this, I’m fine.”  But….no, it’s going to take some time.  I’m hanging in there though, and it was a really great trip!

In addition to adjusting to this time zone, this week has also been action packed with two back-to-back local conferences.  I attended the Higher Education Research and Development conference at the beginning of the week, which is focused on new and developing technologies in the college space.  I heard about a lot of really cool products (including updates on BibliU which I know some of you learned about last year).  I’m looking forward to bringing more information to you all in the future.

I’m currently typing this update from the second conference I attended- the Association for Community Colleges Trustees which brings together board members and presidents from across the country.  It has so many great presentations for board members on board topics (governance, leadership etc.) and covers a lot of best practices from across the US.  It’s a really good conference so far, and I am already learning a lot.

I look forward to being on campus more next week, and I want to invite you to a coffee and pastries with the president event on November 6th in the Quiet Dining Room from 10-11 am.  This is intended as a post-election hangout space for folks who want to just be together regardless of your political preferences.  I know this is a challenging time right now for our country and I just want to provide a comfortable space for all of you, and to help keep our focus on students no matter what the outcome.

Finally, I wanted to share a copy of a letter sent to all of our leg representatives co-signed by our board and classified and faculty union representatives.  Thank you so much to Cat and Lori and all of our colleagues for collaborating on this message. You can view the letter below.

See you all on campus next week!

Cheers,

Jack

Next week, on Friday, November 1, 2024 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, the Giving Table luncheon in support of SCC students and programs will be taking place in the PUB Main Dining Room. The Giving Table luncheon is a fundraising event in support of the students and programs we all work so hard to serve. Funding received at this event is used for things like:

  • Filling the FAFSA delay gap.
  • Paying the fees for Center for Education & Career Center (CECO) students to live in our dorm.
  • Funding more than $75,000 per year in direct emergency assistance to help students address basic needs insecurity.
  • Providing funding for faculty and staff lunches during training and learning days.
  • Paying out over $200,000 per year in scholarship funding that pays for tuition and books.

While there is no charge to attend, guests will be asked to consider making a gift that is personally meaningful during the event. Employees who wish to attend this fundraising event are welcome to do so during their lunch/break periods or during their scheduled work hours with supervisor approval.

If you would like to join us, please click here to RSVP no later than Monday, October 28th. Invite a friend to join you! I look forward to seeing you there.

Technology Support Services (TSS):

Stay safe online and informed!

As we have encountered devastating storms here in the US and approach election time, it’s crucial to stay vigilant against potential scams. Cybercriminals often exploit these events by sending fraudulent emails and social media messages with malicious links or attachments. Here are some tips to protect yourself:

  • Be cautious with emails that have hurricane or election-related subject lines, attachments, or hyperlinks.
  • Verify the authenticity of social media pleas, texts, or door-to-door solicitations related to severe weather events or election information.
  • Ensure any hurricane-related guidance comes from trusted sources like local officials, FEMA, or Ready.gov.
  • For election-related information, rely on official sources such as government websites and verified news outlets.

Microsoft OneDrive is Shoreline CC’s Official Cloud Storage and Sharing Platform:

We have observed an increase in fraudulent emails impersonating Shoreline CC users encouraging individuals to click on Dropbox “shared files” in attempts to compromise network accounts. TSS would like to remind everyone that Dropbox (or other similar file-sharing platforms) is not approved software for the College and, therefore, should not be used when storing, sharing, or creating documents within the College.

Please be sure to use Microsoft OneDrive for your cloud file storage and sharing needs. OneDrive is part of our ongoing efforts to streamline operations and maximize the value of and protect our existing resources. This powerful cloud storage and sharing platform is available to all Shoreline users.

Benefits of OneDrive:

  • Built-in Security and Compliance: OneDrive aligns with industry standards to ensure our data is protected.
  • Included in your Shoreline.edu Account: No additional purchase necessary and no additional sign-on required.
  • Seamless Integration with Microsoft 365: OneDrive integrates with the Microsoft 365 suite, which we use daily, allowing easy access to files directly from applications like Word, Excel, and Teams.
  • Collaboration Tools: OneDrive enables real-time co-authoring and easy sharing of documents.
  • Compliance with WA State Retention and Public Records Laws: Using your Shoreline.edu OneDrive account as the only place to store your work-related data and files complies with retention and public records requirements.

OneDrive can also be installed directly on your Shoreline device for automatic file synchronization between your local hard drive and your OneDrive cloud environment. For anyone interested in learning more about Microsoft OneDrive, you can visit Microsoft’s Training Site here

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Network Rewiring and Hardwiring Connection Project Update:

Below is the updated building list of the rewired and hardwired network connections that have been restored and those in progress with expected completion dates. As mentioned at the beginning of this project, most of the building wiring has not been updated for over a decade or more (emphasis on more). During this project, we have already encountered several major issues in the buildings as we run new cabling and test the integrity of previous network connections.  We continue to utilize our third-party vendor (Milne) and expect to be fully completed in early 2025.

Facilities and Capital Projects:

College Roundabout Update

Overview and History: The College’s Residence Hall Bldg. 7000 was completed and received the City of Shoreline’s approved Certificate of Occupancy in 2019. During construction, the College did a traffic study for the new housing. It showed that the City of Shoreline’s traffic delay standards weren’t being met at the intersection of Greenwood Avenue North with 160th Street North and NW Innis Arden Way. The College was granted six years to improve the intersection from when the student housing building is complete as a condition of site permitting and granting of a Certificate of Occupancy. As required, the College paid the City of Shoreline $2 million dollars to fund a substantial portion of this project.

City of Shoreline’s Proposed Design and Construction Schedule:
Design Development: Q3 2023 – Q1 2024

Parent Child Center (PCC):

PCC Resource Fair on 10/25 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM: Junaid Haq, Director, sent out a survey to all families and a few reached out about having training/resources on early childhood education. This gave him the idea to have quarterly resource fairs on topics that families showed interest. Each quarter will be focused on a new topic.

PCC Costume Walk on 10/31 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM: This is an annual event that the PCC organizes for the month of October. Costumes for the children are optional.  Junaid opens this event up to all departments and if they would like to participate. This event gathers children, faculty, and a few parents to enjoy our beautiful campus, and it builds a sense of community by visiting different departments.  Please ensure that any treats are peanut-allergen-free.

Budget and Capital Finances:

Soroush Maleki, Director, has completed the 2024-25 budget upload earlier than prior years. He is scheduling meetings to review the budget upload with E-Team and their respective management teams including providing Budget Position Staffing Plans (new this year) as well as developing and implementing additional budget training.

Business and Administrative Services:

Joe Mazur was elected by his peers to serve as the 2024-25 Chair of the Business Affairs Council Operating Budget Committee (BAC OBC). The Business Affairs Council (BAC) is a Sub-Council authorized by and reports to the WACTC College Presidents.
