Events and News
Hey folks, I hope everyone is doing well and recovering from the storm. This has been a busy, but engaging week on my end. I’m definitely having a “I need to make a list, prioritize projects, and prep for some weekend work” kind of weeks.
I had a great meeting late last week with Kara Mora Laveaga, the Consulate of Mexico in Seattle and our VP of DEIA Brian Ramos. We discussed opportunities for us to partner with the consulate to support Mexican and Mexican-origin students as well as our diverse Hispanic/Latinx community including our wonderful immigrant students. There is much to do, and we are here to do it- more information will be shared as it develops.
As you know this month is Native American Heritage month and I was able to join two great events just this last week. Pamela SeaMonster from the Snohomish Tribe of Indians shared her traditional storytelling with us. It was really beautiful and moving- I particularly enjoyed the Basket Ogress stories (Our Tulalip colleagues have a cool website description here). Our students and staff were so lucky to have this opportunity to be in this space together. Also, we screened “Our Grandmother the Inlet” by Kaya George and Jaime Leigh Gianopoulos. This short film sheds light on the mental health challenges faced by Indigenous youth and the enduring spirit to reclaim their connection to culture, water, and land. We were so fortunate to have a discussion post-film with Kaya and Jaime, students, staff, and faculty. Thank you to VP Brian Ramos and the DEIA for bringing us both of these special events.
This week we have been celebrating International Week here on campus. I was able to join IE’s Open House event and did pretty good on the “guess the babies’ game” (matching current baby photos to adult pics of staff). It was fun getting some tea and catching up with folks. I missed the coffee and tea event this year unfortunately!!
This week also included the Transgender Day of Remembrance. This is a day is to commemorate the trans folks who are no longer with us due to anti-trans violence and to encourage us to continue to support our local and broad trans community. I know in our student post-election get-together recently one student expressed concern about support for non-binary students and I was glad we had many Shoreline folks to connect with them and support their educational journey.
Hey, did you make it to the Clay Club event this week? I told them I come “every year” (which is true, but I don’t have a long trajectory yet)- the work is so beautiful and reasonably priced! I’m so impressed with the work they do for this event.
Thank you to everyone who got us through the Bomb Cyclone! I sent a separate email to campus about that, because I wanted to make sure special thanks went out to all those involved with the recovery here on campus. I truly appreciate all of your efforts.
Be well all.
Cheers,
Jack
