Events and News
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving break. It seems like the time off had a very positive impact on the Executive Team as folks were very relaxed and funny in our weekly meeting this week. It’s been a pretty packed week both with meetings and getting a start on my supervisee evaluations. Thank you so much for those providing feedback as part of our 360 process this year.
I was able to attend several events this week which were really great! Students and staff from our stellar International Education program put on a wonderful celebration to honor United Arab Emirates National Day! We love our partnership with the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) who worked to bring these students to SCC.
The Pancakes with the President” event was a huge success as well! It was great meeting with some of our University & International partners (Arizona State University, TrainHub, Wichita State University, IELTS Official, Washington State University Pullman EducationUSA, Virginia Commonwealth University and more!) who support our International program! A big shout out to Alexander Mitu, Samira Pardanani and the team that brought us together for pancakes, learning and collaboration! Yes, I did actually flip some pancakes and I’m getting pretty good!

And yes, it was SOUPSGIVINGTIME again this year. The competition was tough this year – I made a Mulligatawny soup (extra spicy) which got an honorable mention. Thank you to Shoreline Community College Foundation celebrity judge John Weber for your culinary judging skills and congrats to Taisa Welhasch for winning the Golden Ladle award for your delicious Ukrainian Borscht and to Pangyen (Ben) Weng for winning the People’s Choice award for the Taiwanese Beef Noodle! Most importantly thank you to all who gave to our students in need. We appreciate it so much.

Cheers,
Jack

Business and Administrative Services:
Reposting Dr. Kahn’s previous communications to help share this important message: “On Monday, 12/2, Governor Jay Inslee issued a Directive to freeze state agency hiring, purchases, service contracts, and travel. This is due to a state budget forecast that shows state costs increasing faster than revenue, leading to a multi-billion-dollar operating budget shortfall through 2029.
This Directive does not include nor impact Shoreline Community College (or any of the colleges in our system). The Directive applies to Cabinet Agencies and does not apply to higher education institutions. As you know we already have positions frozen due to the OFM error but are not looking to freeze any other positions or travel at this time.
As employees and residents of Washington State, we know that we will all feel these impacts through friends and family, the state services we use, and more. We sympathize with those feeling these immediate impacts across Cabinet Agencies and will continue to do our collaborate and do our best work to support SCC through any future challenges.”

Network Rewiring and Hardwiring Connection Project Update:
Below is the updated building list of the rewired and hardwired network connections that have been restored and those in progress with expected completion dates. As mentioned at the beginning of this project, most of the building wiring has not been updated for over a decade or more (emphasis on more). During this project, we have already encountered several major issues in the buildings as we run new cabling and test the integrity of previous network connections. We continue to utilize our third-party vendor (Milne) and expect to be fully completed in early 2025.
