Provide your input about a Community Standard statement

cssTake a brief survey about a draft of a Community Standard statement for Shoreline Community College — open through Oct. 9.

During the past year, several instances of defacing posters for the Muslim Student Association and the Queer Film Festival occurred on campus. The defacements brought a swift response from President Roberts and the campus community. Roberts formed a committee to develop “language that captures our values and clearly states what we mean by a respectful, inclusive community of learners …”

College employees are encouraged to review the draft statement and provide feedback through Oct. 9.  A finalized statement is expected later during fall quarter.

Time to Party Like It’s 1965! Join Us For Shoreline’s 50th Birthday Party Fri., Sept. 25

1965 party poster

Shoreline Community College started coming to life in 1963 when 806 student applications were accepted. In January of 1964, classes began, held in the evenings at Shoreline High School, now Shoreline Center. But it wasn’t until 1965 that Shoreline had its own campus. 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Shoreline Community College campus and the beginning of instruction in college facilities. So what does that mean? Par-tay!

Join us Fri., Sept. 25 to party like it’s 1965. The festivities will kick off in the PUB Main Dining room at 6 p.m. with a series of speakers. Live music will begin at 7 and go until 10. Come enjoy fun, food and popular 60s fads on this evening of celebrating our campus and its thriving community on its 50 birthday. Free and open to the public.

Olympia-approved pay raises are here

Shoreline Community College employees are receiving the pay increases approved by the state Legislature.

The state budget approved in June by lawmakers included 3 percent raises for all employees in the community and technical college system. It was then up to the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges and the colleges themselves to work out the details of implementing the pay increases for each employee category.

At Shoreline, classified employees have already received their increases as the details for classified employees were worked out at the statewide level.

Administrative-exempt employees are scheduled to start seeing the increase with the Oct. 10, 2015 payroll.  College officials applied an approach similar to the classified increase for administrative-exempt staff members, who are not in a union at Shoreline.

Faculty members will also have pay increases available; although just how the funds will be distributed will be part of discussions with faculty union officials.

While the increases have been applied or will be applied at varied dates, they have or will include back pay to July 1, the effective date of pay raises as intended by the Legislature.
