Marge Higby, former veterans coordinator, passes away

Marge Higby, the longtime Veterans Program Coordinator at Shoreline Community College, passed away at age 75, Dec. 31, 2014.

“Marge worked for many years in registration, but her work as the Veterans Certifying Official was her true legacy,” Dean of Students Kim Thompson said. “Her care and devotion to student veterans was legendary.  She was their true champion.

Marge Higby

“The work she did with student veterans was the foundation for Shoreline’s current Veterans Resource Center.   She will always be remembered for the work she did to ensure veteran student success.”

She was born Marjorie Johansen, Sept. 10, 1939 in Manti, Utah to Vernon Peter and Barbara Clark Johansen. She married Clifton Brown Rippon Oct. 30, 1959, and had five children, 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She later married Patrick Morgan Higby and they had three beloved dogs, Gus, Maggie and Tippy 2.

Marjorie was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She grew up in Heber and Mt. Pleasant and graduated high school from North Sanpete High in 1957. She lived in Nampa, Idaho for six years and then in Kennewick, Wash., for 12 years before moving to the Seattle area. She lived in Mountlake Terrace for more than 30 years and worked at Shoreline Community College with “her” veterans.

She loved to cook, garden, crochet, knit, decorate, and arrange flowers. Her hearth was warm and cozy. Marjorie especially loved to return home each year to Sanpete County in May for Memorial Day. She will be buried at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. A funeral service will be held Jan. 10, at the Mt. Pleasant LDS Stake Center at 1 p.m. with viewing from 11 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Online condolences http://www.rasmussenmortuary.com.

ORCA transit cards for students have arrived

The shipment of 650 ORCA transit cards has arrived from Metro Transit!

Normally, the cards that are available for purchase by students and subsidized by the Sustainable Commuter Option Fee would’ve gone on sale Dec. 31 at the Cashier’s Office in the 5000 Building (FOSS). Because of the unanticipated delay in the cards arriving on campus, Cashier’s Office personnel instead put the names and contact information of students wanting cards on a waiting list.

Students who reserved a card by signing up on the waitlist are being contacted and have until 4:30 p.m., Thursday, January 8, to pick up their reserved ORCA card at the Cashier’s Office. After that time, the reservation will be cancelled and the card will be made available for other students to acquire.

For students not on the waiting list, there are still 90 ORCA cards that were unreserved and now available for purchase at the Cashier’s Office.  Also, any ORCA cards that were reserved but not picked up will be available for sale at the Cashier’s Office on Friday morning.

When picking up a card, students should bring Shoreline student ID and a copy of their class schedule to the Cashier’s Office.

After the 650 ORCA cards are all given out, the Student Leadership Center will make available a limited number of free-ride passes at no charge. To get a free-ride pass, students should bring student ID and class schedule to the Student Leadership Center, Room 9301 in the PUB (9000 building). Free-ride passes will be available until they are gone.
