Athletics banquet dinner

invitePlease join us on Thursday night, June 5, 2014 at 7 p.m. in the PUB. We will recognize our student-athletes with athletic and academic awards from the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges and other special team awards.

Our Guest speaker, Dr. Leon F. “Skip” Rowland of Seattle, is a renowned motivational speaker and leadership development specialist who will inspire us all!

This will be a dress-up affair. In our festive atmosphere, enjoy your dinner, beverages, and dessert while you listen to light music throughout the evening. Tickets are $10 for seniors, students, and children and $12 for general-public adults. Tickets may be purchased by check or credit card in the Athletic Office of Shoreline Community College. This event, started in 1998, ran consecutively through 2006. Missing for the last seven years, we’re glad to be bringing it back to celebrate our Shoreline Athletic teams and student-athletes!

Meet Stephanie Diemel: New eLearning Faculty-in-Residence

diemelStephanie Diemel is a professor of physics and astronomy, and has been with Shoreline since 1998.  She is an active participant in the Shoreline eLearning Community on campus and does not hesitate to share her technical expertise with students, faculty and staff.

Stephanie received her M.S. in Physics from San Diego State University and is currently pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Instructional Design from the University of Wisconsin.  As part of her commitment to excellence in online teaching, she had her course PHYS 110 – Concepts of the Physical World certified by Quality Matters in 2013, and today she is a QM Peer Reviewer.

Please, welcome Stephanie as our new eLearning Faculty-in-Residence for the academic year 2014-2015.

Monday, June 2:

The SBA Parliament will host its regular meeting from 3-5 p.m. in the Quiet Dining Room in the PUB! Make sure to encourage students to get involved in their student government!

Wednesday, June 4:

Come and see new cars, have free food and see race car driver Molly Helmuth with her race car at the Auto Experience at Shoreline in the courtyard.

The final between the lines community read will take place at 11:30 in room 9202.

Funk ‘n’ Groove will be playing outside the PUB at 11:30.

The SCC Chorale and Shoreline Singers, directed by Fredrick Lokken, present their spring concert entitled “Landscapes of the Heart: Exploring the Intersections of Nature, Geography, and Emotion”, with music by Palestrina, Mozart, Schumann, Morten Lauridsen, Eric Barnum, The Beatles, and more! Show starts at 7:30 at Calvin Presbyterian Church.

Tree planting honors retiring Prof. Betsey Barnett

Friends, family and co-workers gathered Friday, May 30, 2014, to plant a tree and honor Prof. Betsey Barnett, who is retiring from teaching at Shoreline Community College.

Barnett grew up in a military family in Western Europe, mostly in Naples, Italy; Paris, France; and Brussels, Belgium. She came to the United States permanently when she was 17 years old. Barnett has a B.A. in Psychology and a B.A. in French Language and Literature from Seattle University, a master’s degree in Special Education from the University of Washington, and a PhD in Multicultural Education, also from UW.

She has been a library aide on a bookmobile, a teacher of fourth-graders with behavior disorders, a parent educator, a preschool teacher and a child care center director. She taught in the Education program at Shoreline Community College for 15 years before moving to Multicultural Studies.

Barnett lives on a yacht with her partner George and her 22-year old son Lucas, who is a senior at UW. She likes teaching better than anything, but also likes sailing, kayaking, reading science fiction, bike commuting and playing with her family.
