Shoreline Students Shine at DECA ICDC!

We are thrilled to announce that three of our outstanding Shoreline Community College students have earned top 10 finishes in their event categories at the prestigious DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in San Francisco!

Matthew Adrian and Sienna Gunawan placed in the top 10 in International Marketing.
Kai-Cheng Liao earned a top 10 finish in Financial Accounting.

A total of 12 Shoreline students, who achieved 1st and 2nd place at the state competition, traveled to San Francisco, to compete.

DECA ICDC is a highly competitive event with thousands of students from across the globe, and competing each year. This remarkable achievement highlights the dedication, skill, and hard work of our students, and we couldn’t be prouder of their success.

Congratulations to Matthew, Sienna, and Kai-Cheng for representing Shoreline Community College with excellence! We look forward to seeing what they will achieve next!

Also, thank you to Professors Renda Palo and Andy Stephens for their leadership this week as well as Carl Roer for the mentorship of some of these students over the last three months.

Mental Health First Aid

Free Mental Health First Aid Training Offered at Shoreline Community College!

Shoreline Community College Counseling Center is offering free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for our campus community. MHFA is a research-supported international education program developed to teach adults how to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges. MHFA is a skills-based course that gives people the tools to assist someone who might be struggling with mental health or substance use challenges and connect them with appropriate support and resources. To date, 2.5 million people across the United States have been trained in MHFA.

Just as CPR helps those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, MHFA prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step Action Plan that guides them through reaching out and offering appropriate support.

With support from the Counseling Center, this training (valued at $170.00/participant) is FREE to Shoreline Community College employees and students.Training Details

We are currently offering a blended training which includes:

  • 2-hour, self-paced online training prior to the in-person training and
  • 6.5 hour in-person training

This quarter’s in-person training is scheduled for: Thursday, June 12th, 9:00am-3:30pm

The self-paced online training must be completed prior to attending the in-person training.  You must complete the online and in-person training to become a certified Mental Health First Aider. MHFA certification lasts for 3 years.

Please email Gwyn Hoffman-Robinson at gehoffman@shoreline.edu to register and/or find out more information. Please note registration is limited and a waiting list will be started when capacity is reached. Once registered, details as far as room location, etc. will be shared.

Campus Updates 4/10/2025

Events and News

Looking out the window today and seeing a *slight* ray of Sunshine and hoping it stays.  It’s been a pretty rainy week with two fake springs this year (at least two) – let’s just do this!  It’s spring quarter, right? And today enrollment is up almost 4% compared to last year!

This has been a pretty busy week with more “run of the mill” items.  At the end of last week, we made some good progress on strategic action team items, worked on the PRFR accreditation report (and proudly, I have all my section drafts completed!), and had a lot of meetings with folks.

I also met with King County Presidents to discuss “the state of the state”, attended the Presidents’ Alliance on Immigration and International Students policy meeting, met with board members, did a fun tour of the new CECO space (it looks great if you haven’t seen it recently!!), hung out with some of our King County colleagues, and had a couple meetings with potential new partnerships for the college.

I want to invite you to next week’s state of the budget meeting on Wed., 4/16 at 3:00 PM in Room 1104 or on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83173429202

This meeting is intended to provide:

  1. An overview of the budget approval process in Washington state.
  1. An overview of the current budget situation in Washington state and the proposals from the House, the Senate, and the Governor.
  1. An understanding of what Shoreline CC has done thus far to prepare for the budget proposal(s).
  1. Answers to questions regarding next steps

And finally—I am hoping to get some plants in the ground this weekend.  Anyone growing anything fun?  Any suggestions?  Have a great week!

Cheers,

Jack
