Message from President Roberts: Update on international travel

Dear Colleague,

On February 3rd, a federal judge in Seattle granted Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s request for a temporary restraining order to immediately halt implementation of President Donald Trump’s Executive Order on immigration nationwide. On February 9th, a federal appeals court ruled the restraining order remains in place.

In the coming days and months, there will be a lot of legal discussion between the Department of Justice and district judges regarding the Executive Order, the Temporary Restraining Order, and other potential legal challenges. This legal discussion could involve the U.S. Supreme Court. At this time, we do not know what the final outcome will be nor how long it will take.

Until the issue is resolved in the courts, it may be best to advise students from the seven identified countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen – to contact the International Education office (or their consulate) if they are considering traveling outside the United States.

Currently, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is complying with the Temporary Restraining Order so students who are U.S. Citizens or Green Card holders are able to travel without restriction until the legal challenges have been resolved.

In the coming weeks, there will be times when we have may more questions than answers. We will continue to monitor the status of this lawsuit and provide updates to keep you informed.

Respectfully,

Cheryl
Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D.
President

Featuring Vincent C.H. Yao, Director-General Taipei Economic and Cultural Office
Seattle.

•  What is the present relationship between Taiwan and the U.S., and what might it look like in the future?
• What is the role of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in advancing mutual understanding and commerce?

Taiwan has made many important contributions to Asian culture. According to the U.S. Department of State’s Taiwan Fact Sheet, “The United States and Taiwan enjoy a robust unofficial relationship” despite the fact that in 1979 the U.S. switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei, Taiwan’s capital, to Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic of China.  With us to discuss Taiwan’s history and culture, and the role of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in advancing cultural understanding and commercial relations in the Pacific Northwest, is Vincent C.H. Yao, the Director-General of TECO in Seattle.
