Multi-stall All-Gender Restrooms Coming to Shoreline Campus!

On April 5th, the College Council heard a student presentation for a plan to introduce multi-stall, all-gender restrooms to four (4) restrooms at Shoreline Community College campus. The College Council made a recommendation to the Executive Team. On April 19th, the Executive Team made a recommendation to the president who approved the all-gender restroom plan and will move forward with developing a firm timeline for the construction project and communications.

This plan will include upgrading the first floor PUB restrooms, both men’s and women’s into a multi-stall, all-gender restroom which will require updated signage and construction. The plan also included upgrading of a restroom in the 2900 building and the 1800 building. This plan was generated after many hours of research and work by the Associated Student Government and members of the ASG were instrumental in this effort and the All-Gender Restroom Proposal.

President Cheryl Roberts praised the students for providing such good information to the College Council by saying, “I want to lend my voice to the chorus of praise to the students for doing such an outstanding presentation representing the issue to College Council. It was personal, well-researched and persuasively presented in a way that kept everyone engaged and wanting to support the multi-stall, all-gender restroom proposal.”

Please watch this two minute informational video to learn more about the plan:

Rezina Habtemariam, Director of Student Life and Jason Francois, Director of Facilities & Capital Projects will be working together to formulate a complete construction plan and timelines. Rezina will also be working with Mary Brueggeman, Vice President of Advancement on the communications plan for the entire campus.

Alt Text in Canvas – Accessibility Action Week Tip of the Day:

Many of us like to use images in our Canvas classrooms. In order for a low-vision student to access information about those images, each image must contain “alternative text” (or “alt text”) which is read by the screen reader in place of an image, allowing the content of that image to be accessible by all learners. When we embed images into Canvas using the rich text editor, there is an option to add alt text for each image. The content that you choose to use for your alt text will vary with application, though there are some established best practices.

Here what our students say about accessibility

What does UDOIT mean?! It is finally easy for anyone to check their Canvas classroom for accessibility. UDOIT is a great new tool that is inside Canvas – a few clicks and it has checked your full course for Accessibility.  It also provides information on how to fix the issues!  Our FLC has also put together a handy checklist if you want to check your course that way.  FLC Members will be present to show you how to use the tools and to help you quickly make improvements.

“Digital Accessibility in Higher Ed: Risk Assessment, Responsibility and Benefits” with Dr. Janet Sedgley, University of Montana

It feels like a new buzz phrase – digital accessibility.  Those steeped in it, throw the term around daily.  Most others don’t find the term very accessible (aka approachable).  More individuals are starting to understand a little about how to create accessible Word documents and that web images require alt tags.  We have added more steps to our work processes. Why?

Let’s take a step back and get a general view of what’s happening with higher education and digital accessibility.  Is it truly an issue that needs our attention, how involved are each of us and what is higher education’s return on investment as far as digital accessibility.

This presentation is part of the T&L Conference but you are welcome to attend this session even if not registered for the full conference.  Please RSVP here so we have enough seats set up for you.

If you cannot attend an on campus training, please reach out to eLearning Services and we can set up individual sessions as needed.
