Gale tells the story of seventeen-year-old Gale Winters, who, after losing her home in Iowa due to a derecho (a severe massive windstorm), is sent to live with her 2 married aunts near Seattle, while her parents stay behind to rebuild. Now Gale must navigate a new school in her senior year, contend with a group of mean girls (cheerleaders), and come to terms with the fact that her beloved dog, Stormy has gone missing. All while dealing with the trauma of losing her home to a massive climate event. In this modern reimagining of The Wizard of Oz, it is a story filled with both humor and a deeper message about loss, friendship, the devastating effects of climate change, and the true meaning of home.

2024 Commute Trip Reduction Survey

Greetings,

It’s time for the Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) Survey!

The state is gathering new baseline data that will help develop programs for commuting, so it is important to complete this survey.  We are aiming for 100% participation. All information is good information. Even if you telecommute most days, we need to gather that data.

Please let your supervisor know if you need any accommodations to take the survey.

The survey takes about 5 – 10  minutes to complete.   See below for how to enter your name for some fun prizes!

Use this link to take the survey: https://ctrsurvey.org/s/2024-scc-staff-are-great

Or use the QR code (attached) to take the survey on your smartphone.

What is Commute Trip Reduction?

It’s a state law and program that focuses on reducing congestion and improving air quality. The CTR law affects Washington’s nine most populous counties: Clark, King, Kitsap, Pierce, Snohomish, Spokane, Thurston, Whatcom, and Yakima. Employers in these counties participate if they have 100 or more full-time employees who begin work between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. These employers are required to have CTR programs that provide their employees with the tools, knowledge, and resources to explore their commute options. The CTR survey helps employers understand the commute patterns of their employees so they can help improve employee commutes. The survey also helps cities, counties, transit agencies, and the state understand and improve commutes.

I telework, do I still have to take the survey?

Yes, even though you may telework, your views and comments still help support the workplace and the purpose of this survey.

Are my responses anonymous?

Yes. No personally identifiable information is collected. The summarized worksite data may be shared with your employer, jurisdiction, and state government.

The CTR law requires WSDOT to report on CTR program performance every two years. The survey helps us understand and report reductions in air pollution and energy use, and monitor the effectiveness of CTR programs implemented at various worksites. View the CTR Survey Explanation website  for more information.

If you would like to have your name entered for some fun prizes (again, the survey itself does not collect this information), please take a screenshot of your survey submittal success screen and forward to:  Mary Lou Ames, mames@shoreline.edu.  Use subject:  PRIZE DRAWING

Thank you for participating in the 2024 Shoreline CTR Survey!

Events and News

Hey folks, I hope everyone is doing well and recovering from the storm. This has been a busy, but engaging week on my end.  I’m definitely having a “I need to make a list, prioritize projects, and prep for some weekend work” kind of weeks.

I had a great meeting late last week with Kara Mora Laveaga, the Consulate of Mexico in Seattle and our VP of DEIA Brian Ramos.  We discussed opportunities for us to partner with the consulate to support Mexican and Mexican-origin students as well as our diverse Hispanic/Latinx community including our wonderful immigrant students. There is much to do, and we are here to do it- more information will be shared as it develops.

As you know this month is Native American Heritage month and I was able to join two great events just this last week.  Pamela SeaMonster from the Snohomish Tribe of Indians shared her traditional storytelling with us. It was really beautiful and moving- I particularly enjoyed the Basket Ogress stories (Our Tulalip colleagues have a cool website description here). Our students and staff were so lucky to have this opportunity to be in this space together. Also, we screened “Our Grandmother the Inlet” by Kaya George and Jaime Leigh Gianopoulos. This short film sheds light on the mental health challenges faced by Indigenous youth and the enduring spirit to reclaim their connection to culture, water, and land. We were so fortunate to have a discussion post-film with Kaya and Jaime, students, staff, and faculty. Thank you to VP Brian Ramos and the DEIA for bringing us both of these special events.

This week we have been celebrating International Week here on campus.  I was able to join IE’s Open House event and did pretty good on the “guess the babies’ game” (matching current baby photos to adult pics of staff).  It was fun getting some tea and catching up with folks.   I missed the coffee and tea event this year unfortunately!!

This week also included the Transgender Day of Remembrance.  This is a day is to commemorate the trans folks who are no longer with us due to anti-trans violence and to encourage us to continue to support our local and broad trans community.  I know in our student post-election get-together recently one student expressed concern about support for non-binary students and I was glad we had many Shoreline folks to connect with them and support their educational journey.

Hey, did you make it to the Clay Club event this week? I told them I come “every year” (which is true, but I don’t have a long trajectory yet)- the work is so beautiful and reasonably priced!  I’m so impressed with the work they do for this event.

Thank you to everyone who got us through the Bomb Cyclone!  I sent a separate email to campus about that, because I wanted to make sure special thanks went out to all those involved with the recovery here on campus.  I truly appreciate all of your efforts.

Be well all.

Cheers,

Jack
