Introducing new Instructional Media Director Randy Gottfried

IMG_9056
Shoreline welcomes Randy Gottfried as the new Instructional Media Director as of January 4, 2016. Randy comes to Shoreline from the University of Montana, where he spent the last nine years managing the Presentation & Technology department. During Randy’s tenure at Montana, his department provided campus with 150 new classroom technology systems, iMac computer labs, lecture capture software, live-streaming of events, and video production services. Randy has a strong drive to use his multimedia and technology talents to further educational programs. While at the University of Arkansas, he developed a distance education service for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences. Randy also was the College’s Teaching Resource Center technical director, providing technology support and equipment to the College’s faculty. Randy began his career at Ohio University, his alma mater, supervising the media and distance education operations of the Ohio University Telecommunications Center.

When off-the-grid, Randy enjoys hiking, kayaking, and camping in national parks. Many Montana weekends were spent visiting Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada. Randy also enjoys musical theatre, and is looking forward to attending plays in the greater Seattle area.

Randy is very excited to join the Shoreline community. Welcome Randy!

Come to the Community Read Kick-off!

obroodHappy New Year!

Sci-Fy and Social Justice
It’s Community Read Time. You are invited to read Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories From Social Justice Movements with faculty, staff, students and administrators. This book is edited by Walidah Imarisha and Adrienne Maree Brown. “The stories represent a global quest for social transformation, for justice. They are about people from different background and worlds, expanding the notions of solidarity and community, redefining service, and exploring and rediscovering the human spirit in baffling times, under challenging circumstances (Sheree Renee Thomas, 2015). These are timely and critical stories that support our College’s commitment to equity, justice, engagement, and success for all.

Students Get a Free Copy
This Wednesday, January 6, the Community Reads is having a kick off for all those participating with us this quarter. At this event you’ll get a deeper introduction into what the book is about, why we’re doing this program at Shoreline, and you’ll also be able to pick up your copy of the book (if you haven’t already done so). Sign up now and please join us tomorrow, January 6, in the PUB, Room 9201 from 1:30-2 p.m to help us kick start this year’s Shoreline Community Read!

If You Can’t Make It
Classified staff and students, if you’re unable to attend this event, you can pick up the book from the Student Leadership Center in the PUB anytime the office is open. The Community Read meetings begin in week 3 of the quarter, January 20th at 12:30 in the Quiet Dining Room in the PUB.

And there’s more!
We plan to have activities on campus that support the focus of this book, and we are hoping to bring the editors to the campus Spring 2016. Some faculty members are using Octavia’s Brood in their Winter 2016 courses.

Questions?
If you have any questions about getting access to the book, please contact Caroline Conley, Rezina Habtemariam or Yvonne L. Terrell-Powell.

Reminder about Shoreline Early Alert Program

The SEA team would like to remind you of the early alert system called Shoreline Early Alert (SEA). SEA is a referral program designed to help students encountering difficulty in the pursuit of their academic goals by providing academic intervention.

NOTE: Intervention is a process and may not produce immediate results. Our goal is to connect with the student early in the quarter and connect them to the appropriate resources.

SEA is intended to serve ALL (domestic and international) students on campus, so we are excited to announce that Lianne Almughirah, Assistant Director for International Student Success, has joined the SEA Team! (See her bio on the International Education staff page.) Lianne has already been conducting early alert work and support services for International students, but will now be officially a part of the SEA referral process.

Wondering when to refer?

*   Low test scores
*   Unexplained excessive absenteeism or tardiness
*   Pacing in an online class
*   Not doing assignments
*   Financial matters
*   External concerns

If you already reached out to a student about any of the topics above and have not seen a positive change, then using SEA would be a great next step.

It’s Easy to Make a Referral to SEA!
Use the SEA Referral Form rather than sending individual emails. A SEA Team member will respond within 24 hours to both you and the student. SEA is intended to provide academic intervention and support to students in a variety of ways.

Observed or encountered other issues of concern?

*   Crisis management or threat: STAT referral program
*   Personal concerns: Counseling Services
*   Campus emergencies: Safety and Security
*   Classroom policies or academic integrity: contact your Dean or Supervisor
*   Student Conduct: Kim Thompson, kthompson@shoreline.edu, Dean of Student Affairs
*   For life-threating emergencies, dial 911.
