Instruction Organizational Updates

Dear Colleagues,

Thanks to those of you who carved out time last week to provide feedback regarding the restructuring of leadership for our instructional units. I appreciate the responses shared, and am grateful to our new VPI, Dr. Weng, for being available to consult (before he’s even started, no less).

As stated, the main reason for this change is to address the issues created by the current leadership structure which has made communication and getting work to completion more complicated than necessary.  The current structure also makes it difficult for administrators to directly support students, faculty and staff in ways that go beyond managing timelines and requirements.

While there are many factors that support a need for structural modification, below are the primary objectives sought with implementing this change:

  1. Keep/bring connected disciplines together – this includes student goals (workforce preparation, transfer) or funding eligibility such as Perkins access for instructional equipment
  1. Increase direct leadership support to faculty, staff, and students
  1. Keep budget within (or less than) the current amount funded
  1. Align unit/division structure in ways that support needed work on behalf of the College

No changes are planned for the Learning Resources unit.

The College will be moving forward with the following instructional leadership updates:

Events and News

Happy Pride month! As you may likely know Pride month was started as way to celebrate our LGBTQ community.  It officially started post-Stonewall riots which happened in 1969.  Please learn more about this important part of our history.

There are many ways you can celebrate Pride month – we have a couple of wonderful events through our Gender Equity Center (listed below).  I want to really encourage all admin, staff and faculty to come out for these events and support our community.

This is a rainbow flag advertising the Seattle Pride Parade meet-up event

If you are more of a solo person, there are a lot of wonderful films and art activities being highlighted this month to learn about the diversity within the LGBTQ community. If you are more social, sometimes it’s as simple as reaching out to a colleague you appreciate and reminding them of that.

One of my favorite Pride events I attended as a younger person was celebrating in Cambridge, MA after equal marriage was adopted in May of 2004 (Massachusetts was the first state to do so).  A group of friends and I bought a bunch of flowers and handed them out to couples who were getting married at the Cambridge courthouse.  There was a lot of crying and joy that day and it was fun to play a small part in that.

As you know we are committed to supporting our wonderful LGBTQ colleagues here at Shoreline and are very proud to celebrate with this month (and every month!).  We are also so lucky for the advocacy to start a Gender Equity Center on campus and all the work Roberto Lopez, and his team do to make our students feel welcome and to commune together.

I attended a really fun event this week put on by the Associated Student Government at Shoreline Community College yesterday. The event is called Sunfest (though it rained most of the day when I was around!) and includes a lot of activities to help students lower stress and support mental health as they prepare for quarter finals.

And now I KNOW I made the right hire for VP of Student Services. Ryan Aiello, Ph.D. featured with his new snake friend on his second day of work here!

I want to make sure I take a moment to highlight all of the great student events that have been occurring on campus for both prospective and current students. In May, Advising hosted a Running Start Info night, we recently had an excellent Career Fair, and Outreach has led some fantastic large events/tours for incoming high school students. Check out some images below!

I also had a great opportunity this week to reconnect with a colleague Charlie King.  Charlie works with colleges to make connections with Chinese students who wish to study in the US.  Charlie did a tour of campus this week and is working with International Education to see if there may be some possibility for partnership.

Lastly, my apologies for missing my virtual office hours meeting on Thursday. I was in a meeting with the JUMC.

Be well all!

Cheers,

Jack

Wired Network Restoration Project Update: We have reports from our third-party partner regarding the ongoing strike that has caused delays with this project. Unfortunately, the strike continues through this week, however on Thursday 6/6, the union will be voting on whether to continue the strike or accept the proposed agreement. They will send us an update as soon as they know, but if the union votes to end the strike the work on our campus wiring will begin immediately thereafter. We will update everyone once we have further information.
