Free Mental Health First Aid Training Offered at Shoreline Community College!
Shoreline Community College Counseling Center is offering free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for our campus community. MHFA is a research-supported international education program developed to teach adults how to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges. MHFA is a skills-based course that gives people the tools to assist someone who might be struggling with mental health or substance use challenges and connect them with appropriate support and resources. To date, 2.5 million people across the United States have been trained in MHFA.
Just as CPR helps those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, MHFA prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step Action Plan that guides them through reaching out and offering appropriate support.
With support from the Counseling Center, this training (valued at $170.00/participant) is FREE to Shoreline Community College employees and students.

This week I have spent a significant amount of time connecting with HR colleagues to garner support for the payroll transition to Finance. I am updating the team regularly on progress and will share more widely as we lock in the next steps.
This week, I also participated in and supported several great community and campus events. I attended the college’s annual ceremony honoring Edwin T. Pratt, a Shoreline resident and civil rights activist whose legacy continues to shape us. This year’s observance included a land acknowledgment led by Rashawn Smith, reflections connecting past and present from Dr. J (Ernest B. Johnson II), a proclamation from Mayor Betsy Robertson naming January 29 as Edwin T. Pratt Day, and the announcement by Jacob Bilbo of a new Shoreline park to be named in Mr. Pratt’s honor.
The program also featured powerful contributions from Miriam Pratt, Sarah Haycox, Nancy Rawles, Robert Britten, alumnus Monique Franklin, and others through spoken word, music, and poetry, affirming Mr. Pratt’s enduring vision and impact. It was simply incredible. Special thanks to the Foundation, Savena, Lavena, and Yushin for all your teams’ work doing this!
I also joined colleagues at the University of Washington Shoreline Community College Dental Hygiene Program Open House, where I connected with UW partners, donors, and community members. It was encouraging to see the facility and lab improvements made possible through donor support and to celebrate the strength and visibility of our dental hygiene program. Really cool!
Finally, I supported a historic moment on campus with the first flying of the Black American Heritage flag at Shoreline Community College to officially launch Black History Month. The event drew strong participation and included inspiring remarks from Black Student Union faculty lead Rashawn Smith, who did a wonderful job sharing the significance of the flag and the importance of visibly honoring Black history and identity on campus. Remarks from students in the crowd already demonstrated the importance of doing so, and I was really proud to see this happen at Shoreline. Thanks to all who came out. More soon.
Cheers,
Jack

A note from Wendy:
Taisa has shared that she and her husband will be moving back to Europe, with her last day at Shoreline on February 4. While I am truly sad to see her go, I am deeply grateful for the impact she has made during her time with the Foundation.
Taisa has been an exceptional teammate and a genuine champion for Shoreline. She strengthened and grew our alumni program, elevated the Giving Table, brought new energy to the Donor & Scholar Celebration, and set a new standard for thoughtful, warm donor stewardship.
Beyond her accomplishments, Taisa has been a joy to work with, and her kindness, curiosity, and care for our mission will be greatly missed. We are excited for the next chapter she and Ernesto are beginning and wish them all the best as they return to Europe.
Volunteer opportunity: If you’re interested in volunteering some time to review scholarship applications in April, please let Kara know at khaney@shoreline.edu! Our volunteer reviewers make it possible for us to provide fair, equitable, and timely award decisions for our applicants.
Volunteers are provided with instructions and a clear rubric to follow for scoring decisions. Reviewing is done online through our scholarship platform, AwardSpring. The time commitment changes depending on how many applications you want to review, but on average it’s between 2-4 hours. Full-time faculty can use scholarship reading as part of their service hours.
