Shoreline Community College Chosen as a 2023 MLB All-Star Legacy Initiative Recipient

This summer Major League Baseball’s Midsummer Classic All-Star Game returns to the Emerald City.  This is the third time in franchise history that the Mariners will be hosting. Yesterday Major League Baseball, the Seattle Mariners, and the Mariners Care Foundation announced this year’s recipients of the All-Star Legacy Initiative. Aimed at having a long-term impact on the Greater Seattle community, this initiative seeks to address equity gaps in order to expand access to youth baseball and softball, as well as support the needs of underserved community college students to help them complete their college program. 

Shoreline Community College (SCC) was chosen as a recipient to receive funding through the All-Star Legacy partnership providing aid to local community college students through United Way of King County’s “Bridge to Finish” program. This program offers aid to thousands of students through the Benefits Hub/Food Pantry, providing them with emergency aid funding, meals, transportation and/or housing assistance, all in service of removing barriers to continuing education and degree attainment.  

“The environment is becoming more and more challenging for our students in terms of their cost of living and access to needed resources to be successful as a college student. This area in particular being so close to the city shares some of the same kind of challenges that people see in traditional city environments,” said Dr. Jack Kahn, President of SCC. 

Shoreline Community College was one of the first sites to pilot United Way of King County’s “Bridge to Finish” Benefits Hub/Food Pantry model when it was launched in the 2017/18 school year. The program has now grown to include ten community colleges in total. Last year SCC served 453 students through this program and provided 4, 162 interventions both through coaching and tangible goods. According to program statistics 76% of aid recipients in the “Bridge to Finish” program identify as students of color and 42% are parents. President Kahn said, “In terms of our dedication to our DEAI work we need to recognize the needs of our diverse communities and bring as many resources as possible and access points for our students.  We are so grateful for this project in moving us in that direction!” 

The Legacy investment will provide funding for a Benefits Hub refurbishment at Shoreline Community College.  This will include new appliances in the food pantry as well as a complete restock of healthy food options, a new garment store layout for clothing, a dorm essentials station with bedding, a living essentials station providing items like utensils, dishes, and handheld kitchen tools, as well as a personal essentials area complete with basic toiletries for students. “The Shoreline’s Benefits Hub is honored to be chosen as the MLB/Mariners Legacy Project. In addition, to our existing food pantry we are excited for students to engage in a shopping experience to access the new hygiene pantry in the redesigned space. Staff are looking forward to a more functional space to better support students.” says Savena Garrett, Director of Student Services at SCC.

SCC Alert: Emergency Update

Hello Campus Community:

Shoreline Fire and regional agencies are still active on scene at Bldg. 2600.  Please stay away from the area.  

Bldg. 2300, 2600, 2700, 2800, 2900 and the HSCC construction site have all been evacuated safely with no injuries reported.  On-campus classes in these buildings are cancelled for the day.  

More info regarding the rest of the week to follow. 

Staff in these buildings are directed to work from home or may connect with HR to request an alternate on-campus work location.

Shout-out to eLearning for Inclusive Excellence and Transparency. I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the exceptional work your department has been doing. The clarity and transparency demonstrated in your processes are truly commendable, and I believe they play an integral role in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism within our organization. The number of support articles and request forms make it clear what you are looking for, how you do your work, and what is expected of your department.

In today’s world, where systemic inequities and discrimination persist, it is crucial for departments like yours to pave the way forward. By establishing clear and transparent processes, you ensure that everyone within the organization has an equal opportunity to understand and engage with the various procedures and policies that shape our work environment. This accessibility empowers individuals from diverse backgrounds to participate fully and contribute their unique perspectives, thereby fostering a more inclusive and collaborative culture.

Campus Updates 5/18/23

Events and News 

Good afternoon folks, 

The focus for this past week has been on planning and organization, as we have roughly one month left in the quarter. We have accomplished a lot this quarter as we work through the ransomware incident to prepare for the summer and fall. Glad to be working with all of you as we rebuild.  

In conversations with our Classified Union and the Executive Team, we discussed the pros and cons of being closed on Fridays. What we all agreed on is that we can use our time more productively and efficiently in serving students this summer, rather than being open longer on days which historically have had little traffic. 

For example, in discussing serving students in groups rather than individually, Norah Peters suggested a wonderful idea in-line with our strategic discussions this year. In regard to potential Running Start students, she had the idea of creating “Running Start Registration” events in collaboration with teachers and other community members. The intent is to bring students together into one space and provide registration forms, information, as well as possible live testimonials from previous Running Start students, to inspire new registrations. We have models like this at SCC and these are the kinds of ideas we would love to see developed in various units this summer.  These innovative ideas allow us to bring support directly to our communities in addition to being here to serve them. Looking forward to seeing all your creativity this summer! 

Speaking of innovation, I had the pleasure of giving the welcome address at the Business and Accounting program’s Discover Your Path in Business event. It was very well attended with lots of eager faces both in person at the PUB as well as on Zoom. I want to thank Irene Ferrante, Leo Novsky, Jessica Custis, Matt Versdahl, and Dan King for working hard to put this event together. 

I did get a chance to attend the SIFF opening movie “The Eight Mountains.” It was beautifully made and the event was a lot of fun. It enjoyed meeting some new community members, AND I really love film (so selfishly a win-win for me).  This Friday my wife and I will be in attendance with some colleagues from Seattle- hope to connect with you there!  Plenty to see throughout the weekend as well.

Summer Hours 

During the 2023 summer quarter, the College will move to public operating hours of Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the campus closed on Fridays. These summer operating hours will be in effect Monday, July 10 through Friday, September 1, 2023. Please note the campus will operate on regular Mon-Fri business hours during the first week of Summer quarter (July 3 – 7).   

2023 Winter Closure  

For your planning purposes across the remainder of the calendar year, the College is scheduled for a campus-wide winter closure across the dates of Tuesday, Dec 26th through Friday, Dec 29th, 2023 noting Monday the 25th is a state holiday.  More information regarding classified staff compensable time accrual and directions for admin/exempt staff leave options will be shared out shortly.
