Shoreline Community College Foundation Giving Table Luncheon Raises $100,000 to Support Students Facing Basic Needs Insecurity

Governor Ferguson along with Shoreline students and staff.

Shoreline Community College serves students who are working hard to build stable lives, support their families, and move into living-wage careers. However, too many face barriers like the rising costs of food, housing, transportation, and healthcare, that threaten their ability to stay in school and complete their goals.

These challenges make it difficult for students to focus on their studies. The Giving Table Luncheon exists because community support like yours can make the difference between a student dropping out prematurely, or completing a degree that leads to a secure, living-wage job. Donor generosity provides emergency aid, basic needs support, and scholarships that allow students to stay enrolled, focused and in a position to succeed.

About the Event

On November 7, 2025, the Shoreline Community College Foundation welcomed 296 guests to its annual Giving Table Luncheon, raising $100,000 to support students in need. The event was made possible by 20 dedicated volunteers and 28 generous individual and corporate sponsors.

Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson joined the program and spoke about the essential role community colleges play across Washington and the importance of supporting students who face significant financial barriers. Additional speakers included Shoreline Community College President Jack Kahn, Transitional Studies Interim Dean Jessica Strickland, Honors College Director Michael Overa, and Foundation Executive Director Wendy J. Coates.

However, the most powerful moments at the event came from students. Lily Taylor, who came to Shoreline at age 27 to complete her GED, shared how donor support helped her stabilize her basic needs, enroll in the Honors College, and thrive in a program she once thought was out of reach.

Five other students also offered brief reflections describing how donor-funded support allowed them to stay enrolled allowing them to continue working toward their goals.

The luncheon opened with Shoreline’s land acknowledgement and closed with a traditional song gifted by Muckleshoot tribal member Justice Bill, offered in the spirit of community and cultural respect.

Construction Update: Bracken Building Project

We were notified this afternoon by Bayley (Bracken building contractor) of work that will begin across the NE end of campus on, Wednesday 11/19, at 5:00am. The work is expected to be completed by 8:00am, Friday, 11/21.

The work will impact parking stalls by buildings 2300, 2900, and 6000 and there will be a one lane closure east of building 2900, traffic control will be in place during the lane closure.

See map below for reference.

Power shutdown on Friday, 11/21

Forma will need to conduct another power shutdown as part of the Greenhouse project.  This power shutdown will impact building 6000 on Friday, 11/21, from 5am to 7am.  This will affect most of the 1st floor power and lighting.  The fire alarm system will be put into test mode.  This shutdown will not impact classes and will have little impact to the freezers/fridges in the building. Maintenance will be onsite to assist Forma.

Please reach out to the department of Facilities and Capital Projects if you have any questions.

Campus Updates 11/13/2025

Hey folks, I hope all are doing well.  Since our last update, the most significant event I attended was the Giving table.  This year’s Giving Table fundraising event was a huge success!  Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson gave a wonderful, welcoming opening speech, and we were fortunate to have Jessica Strickland and our featured student share our student stories.   Justice Bill from Muckleshoot Indian Tribe ended the event with a beautiful song.

At a time where hope sometimes is hard to attain, we spent time in community reminding ourselves that our students matter, our donors matter, and community college education matters! Kierah Taylor did such a great job representing students and telling her story.  We are so lucky to have these wonderful students.  Once again, the Shoreline Community College Foundation (and our students!) knocked it out of the park!

The rest of this week I will be at the Association for Community College Trustees (local) conference here in Seattle with three of our Trustees.  Will update about that when I return!

Cheers,

Jack

Advancement & Foundation

Thank you to the many folks across campus who attended and/or volunteered at the Giving Table on Friday! We had 296 registered guests and 28 individual and corporate sponsors. We raised nearly $100,000 so far, and I am pretty sure we will hit $100K in the next week or so as folks who couldn’t attend made gifts this week.

Our special guest speaker was WA State Governor Bob Ferguson. He expressed his appreciation for the donors who help us address our students’ basic needs. Prior to the event, he met with the student speakers for about 20 minutes. It was an educational and meaningful experience for our students.

If you missed the event, but wanted to make a gift, here is the link! And here is the link to the video for the event! Please feel free to share both with your friends and family and anyone else who would be interested!
