We’d like to invite you to two very special events happening next week.

Nationally acclaimed educator, scholar, and strategist, Dr. Michael Benitez Jr. will be on campus to present his keynote:

Navigating the Current Moment: Understanding the Shifts in Culture, Education, and Society for College Campuses.

“We are living in a time of rapid change—shifting policies, cultural tensions, and evolving conversations around identity, education, and leadership. Dr. Michael Benitez offers an insightful, real-time analysis of today’s most pressing issues, breaking down their impact on campuses, communities, and workplaces. With his signature ability to connect historical context to current realities, he provides audiences with the tools to navigate challenges, engage in critical dialogue, and build stronger, more resilient institutions and communities.”

  • Date: Thursday, June 5, 2025
  • Time: 5:30 – 7:00 pm
  • Place: 9000 Building – Main Dining Room

This keynote address is open to the public.

Additionally, prior to his keynote, Dr. Benitez will lead the following workshop exclusively for Shoreline faculty and staff:

Not about You; Not About Me: Towards A Paradigm Shift of Mission Servingness

“Educational institutions have come a long way in attempts to better understand and address inclusive excellence and mission servingness but continue to fall short of addressing systemic practices that perpetuate structural inequities and realizing visions of equity and inclusion. In his presentation, Dr. Benitez aims to rupture and shift current understandings and practices grounded in dominate culture, dispel existing dualities and binaries of teaching and practice that lead to limited outcomes for student success, and provides a framework of culturally relevant servingness for advancing student success.”

  • Date: Thursday, June 5, 2025
  • Time: 2:30 – 4:00 pm
  • Place: Room 1104

This workshop is for faculty and staff only. If you’re interested in attending, we encourage you to work with your supervisor to allow room for this event in your schedule.

We hope you can join us for one or both of these events.

Mental Health First Aid

Free Mental Health First Aid Training Offered at Shoreline Community College!

Shoreline Community College Counseling Center is offering free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for our campus community. MHFA is a research-supported international education program developed to teach adults how to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges. MHFA is a skills-based course that gives people the tools to assist someone who might be struggling with mental health or substance use challenges and connect them with appropriate support and resources. To date, 2.5 million people across the United States have been trained in MHFA.

Just as CPR helps those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, MHFA prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step Action Plan that guides them through reaching out and offering appropriate support.

With support from the Counseling Center, this training (valued at $170.00/participant) is FREE to Shoreline Community College employees and students.
