Free Mental Health First Aid Training Offered at Shoreline Community College!

Shoreline Community College Counseling Center is offering free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for our campus community. MHFA is a research-supported international education program developed to teach adults how to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges. MHFA is a skills-based course that gives people the tools to assist someone who might be struggling with mental health or substance use challenges and connect them with appropriate support and resources. To date, 2.5 million people across the United States have been trained in MHFA.

Just as CPR helps those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, MHFA prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step Action Plan that guides them through reaching out and offering appropriate support.

With support from the Counseling Center, this training (valued at $170.00/participant) is FREE to Shoreline Community College employees and students.

Training Details:

We are currently offering a blended training which includes:

  • 2-hour, self-paced online training prior to the in-person training and
  • 6.5 hour in-person training

This quarter’s in-person training is scheduled for: Thursday, June 12th, 9:00am-3:30pm

The self-paced online training must be completed prior to attending the in-person training.  You must complete the online and in-person training to become a certified Mental Health First Aider. MHFA certification lasts for 3 years.

At the “Public Service & Community Engagement Pathway” event students can:

    • Social Work & Human Services
  • Speak to faculty and learn what to expect as a student in these programs
  • Hear from industry leaders about real-world opportunities in these areas

Explore Pacific Northwest Wines with Wine Educator Michelle Vaughters

Shoreline CC Continuing Education is excited to welcome wine educator Michelle Vaughters to lead the upcoming Pacific Northwest Wines Masterclass on May 29.

With over ten years of experience in the wine industry, Michelle has worked in diverse roles—from Cellar Door Hand in New Zealand to Wine Club Manager in Washington. She brings a hands-on, real-world perspective to her teaching and is passionate about making wine education approachable and enjoyable for everyone.

In this one-night class, you’ll dive into the renowned wine regions of the Pacific Northwest, including Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. Explore how geography, climate, and terroir influence the wines, and gain insight into the history that shapes each region’s unique identity.

SIFF Screenings on Campus This Weekend, 5/23 – 5/25

Shoreline Community College is proud to be a venue for the 2025 Seattle International Film Festival, running from May 15 – May 25 with an amazing lineup of films from around the world!

It’s closing weekend for this year’s festival – take a look at the films being screened right here in the SCC Theater.

Friday 5/23 

  • 3:30pm: Paul Anka: His Way (99 minutes), United States:  He faced it all, stood tall, and did it his way. Get the inside scoop on the life and career of Paul Anka, the Canadian-born son of immigrants who rocketed to the top of the charts not just as a teen heartthrob, but as the songwriter of some of America’s greatest standards. Purchase tickets for Paul Anka.
