Japanese American Day of Remembrance Event

Please join us in commemorating the Japanese American Day of Remembrance with local artist and community activist Erin Shigaki. Shigaki will deliver a presentation titled, Never Again Is Now: Remembering Japanese American Incarceration and lead a mural-making workshop. Sushi and Japanese snacks will be provided!

Shigaki helps run an annual pilgrimage to Minidoka, the American WWII concentration camp where her family was incarcerated, and she is also a part of Tsuru for Solidarity, working to end detention and incarceration for all. In 2020, Shigaki’s mural, “Never Again is Now” installed at Bellevue College in honor of the Day of Remembrance was defaced.

Upcoming Roof Repairs

Hello Campus Community,

We are set to start the roof project for the campus next week.  This project consists of repairs to building 1000, 2900, 3000, 4000 and 1600.  The schedule is as follows.

  • 2/10/25 – 2/17/25
    • 1000 Building Cupolas – Contractor will be removing and replacing cupolas on roof.  There will be minimal noise and vibration.  No impact to the art in the art gallery.  There is a chance of a slight chemical smell when they install the new Cupolas.  SDS is attached. 
  • 2/18/25 – 2/28/25
    • 2900 roof gravel replacement and perimeter work – Contractor will remove roof gravel, repair roof, and replace gravel.  There will be a slight vibration over walkways with little to no impact within the building.  There will be slight noise and chemical smell.  Parking on the east side of building (close to wall) will be taken offline while gravel is removed.  SDS is attached.    
  • 3/3/25 – 3/14/25
    • 3000 soffit stain work – Contractor will be using a lift and scaffold to apply a stain to the soffit around the building.  They will start on the east side of 3000.  No vehicles can be parked in the parking stalls on the east side of 3000 when they start to apply the stain.  It will take them 1-2 days to complete the work on the NE side of 3000.  SDS is attached.
  • 3/17/25 – 3/28/25
    • 4000 skylight replacement – Contractor will remove existing skylight and replace with new.  There will be noise and chemical smells during this project.  To minimize the impact of dust/sawdust falling within the library, a section inside the 2nd floor will be closed off during the project.  SDS is attached. 
  • 3/31/25 – 4/4/25
    • 1600 PMMA and drain replacement – Contractor will be replacing the roof drainage system.  This will require interior and exterior work.  There will be slight noise and chemical smell.  SDS is attached. 

The contractor will do their best to minimize noise during this roof project.  Facilities will do our best to minimize any impact to the buildings while chemicals are being used.  This schedule could change slightly since much of this work is weather dependent.  We’ll be working with building occupants if any changes occur.  Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Campus Updates 2/6/2025

Events and News 

It’s been a tough week this week with the 4:30 a.m. snow-prep calls and the ongoing barrage coming in from DC. I know it has been tough for all of you as well.  Please reach out to your staff and colleagues at this time- particularly those targeted by directives that undermine the work we are doing in our communities to improve and evolve.  I wanted you all to know that I am actively involved in advocating for support for our college and pushing our systems to be more responsive and supportive of our immigrant and LGBTQ communities.  More is needed and certainly more is coming.  I will have a separate communication sharing information about efforts we are working on coming out by early next week. 

Our team met in Olympia last week advocating for our budget and ongoing financial support for faculty, staff and students. Chair /Trustee Rebecca Ringer, Trustee Rebecca Chan, Cat Chiappa, staff and union rep Tirzah Williamson and faculty rep Crystal Hess and two awesome students Dèvon Smith and Karina Oliveira Vilela met with representatives Cindy Ryu, Lauren Davis, Jesse Salomon, Derek Stanford’s staff, & Shelley Kloba.  All seemed understanding of our needs and certainly have been great advocates in the past.  We know we are in a very tough budget season, but they seemed to genuinely connect with us—and our students, staff and faculty did such great presentations (I’m sure you aren’t surprised).   

A few of us will be in DC next week doing the same kind of advocacy at the Federal level, but focusing on workforce support, Pell expansions, and supporting national advocacy for immigrant populations.  The second half of next week I will also be at the Community Colleges for International Development conference.  I am on their board, and amongst other items will be seeking support and guidance for our International programs and activities. 

I know the last few weeks have been challenging and I just want to say how much I appreciate all of your efforts.

Two Feb. 6 Events Postponed

POSTPONED: Due to inclement weather, two events scheduled for Thursday, February 6 will be held instead on Monday, February 24 at the same location and times.

Meet the SCC Alum with 1.3 Million TikTok Followers – Now on 2/24, 4pm, PUB Main Dining Room

The WAVES Asian & Pacific Islander Student Center and our co-sponsors welcome back Shoreline Community College alum and content creator, Hunter Ka’imi, for a special talk titled “How I Gained 1.3 Million Followers on TikTok… And What I Learned.”

Proudly representing the queer and mixed Filipino community, Hunter Ka’imi has dedicated over five years to the dynamic field of content creation and social media. His TikTok posts have received over 161 million likes.

Kaʻimi will offer unique insights into the world of social media from the perspective of a community college student, who started with a handful of followers and now reaches millions of people on a regular basis worldwide.

The event will take place on Thursday, February 24 at 4:00pm in Shoreline Community College’s Main Dining Room (9215 PUB). The talk will be followed by our Lunar New Year celebration featuring cultural displays, food, and live performances from 5:00 to 7:00pm also in the Main Dining Room. All events are free and open to the public.
