AVID Fair Thurs., Oct. 15

AVID

Shoreline will be hosting an AVID Fair (Advancement via Individual Determination) Thurs., Oct. 15 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The fair will be held in the PUB Main Dining Room with 40 colleges representing their school for 20 high schools who will be attending. We anticipate hosting potential students to our campus from as far away as Granger and Olympia. You can view photos from last years event on flickr.

The Quiet Dining Room will be used as a hospitality suite for high school counselors and teachers. Every effort will be made to provide ample seating and eating areas for our current students. This is a three-hour block of time that will provide many to see our beautiful campus and plan on attending Shoreline Community College. Please say hi to these future students and let Amy Stapleton know if you have any questions or concerns at astapleton@shoreline.edu or at extension 7841.

IamUCC4
The American Association of Community Colleges has forwarded us the following message, asking that the Shoreline community participate in a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. on Thurs., Oct. 8. Please participate in your classrooms and offices as you choose and are able.

Dear Community College Colleagues,

We ask that your college participate in a National Moment of Silence in honor of the victims of the shooting at Umpqua Community College.  Please join us this Thursday, October 8, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. (PT)/2:00 p.m. (ET) in observing a moment of silence.

As a show of solidarity and support for our friends and colleagues who are working tirelessly to pick up the pieces on the UCC campus, please use the #IamUCC hashtag and share your support via social media. Please encourage your students, staff, and faculty to participate in these efforts and let’s show Umpqua that we all stand with them as they begin the process of healing their campus community.

Thanks in advance to all of you for supporting Umpqua Community College.

Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 10.41.33 PM
Please join us in the PUB courtyard (inside the main lobby of the PUB if it’s raining) at 12:30 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 7 for a campus community photo to show our love and support for the students, faculty and staff at Umpqua Community College. A social media campaign using the hashtag #IamUCC was started by the president of Portland Community College, and features photos of campus communities across the nation standing in solidarity with Umpqua – we’d like your help in adding Shoreline’s voice to that show of support. The SLC will have banners and posters made in advance for participants to display for the photo, so no need to bring anything but yourself, your colleagues and your students.

Duwamish Revealed Exhibit Opening Reception Thurs., Oct. 8

Shoreline Community College Art Gallery presents…
DUWAMISH REVEALED

Please join us this Thurs., Oct. 8 from 5-7 p.m. for the opening reception of Duwamish Revealed. Check out the stunning exhibit and enjoy a guest performance at 6 p.m.

The exhibit will be showing in the Art Gallery in the lobby of the Administration building (1000 bldg.) Oct. 5-30. The Duwamish Revealed exhibit is the culminating event of the community project that took place in south Seattle from May to September, 2015. It involved a series of outdoor art installations, performances, community activities and other adventures to celebrate Seattle’s only river. In the hopes of reaching out to all of the different language and cultural groups along the river, the project directors, Nicole Kistler and Sarah Kavage, worked with the multi-lingual outreach team at the Environmental Coalition of South Seattle. The Shoreline Community College Art Gallery is honored to share in this celebration by bringing art installations, cultural artifacts, photo documentation and performance from the project to our campus.

Please join us at the opening reception to celebrate the efforts of our local artists, writers, performers, cultural groups, and campus faculty in this exciting celebration of the Duwamish River!

Only a Few Days Left to Let Your Voice Be Heard About the Community Standard Statement!

cssTake a brief survey about a draft of a Community Standard statement for Shoreline Community College — open through Oct. 9.

During the past year, several instances of defacing posters for the Muslim Student Association and the Queer Film Festival occurred on campus. The defacements brought a swift response from President Roberts and the campus community. Roberts formed a committee to develop “language that captures our values and clearly states what we mean by a respectful, inclusive community of learners …”

College employees are encouraged to review the draft statement and provide feedback through Oct. 9.  A finalized statement is expected later during fall quarter.
