Help promote Shoreline’s Solar Institute for Teachers – Priority deadline March 1

With a grant from the National Science Foundation, the Clean Energy Technology program is inviting local area STEM teachers to attend the 2nd annual Washington STEM Educator Solar Institute.  The 3-day summer program helps area middle school and high school instructors learn how to teach solar principles in effective, engaging ways in the classroom.  Participants will learn to install and commission a residential size solar photovoltaic array and gain teaching resources to share with their students.

“This highly interactive workshop brings cutting-edge solar technology into the hands of our local teachers,” said Louise Petruzzella, Director, Clean Energy Technology. “It’s a great opportunity to engage with our community and share resources with local STEM teachers.”

When:  Tuesday-Thursday, July 10-12, 2018
Cost:  FREE for 20 selected nominees; each participant will receive $300 stipend upon completion of the institute.
Priority Deadline: March 1, 2018; apply early for top consideration; late applications considered if space available.

Space is limited to 20 middle school or high school instructors in science, technology, engineering, math, or career/technical training fields.

President Roberts joins national call for DACA legislation

President Cheryl Roberts, Ed.D., has joined more than 200 college and university leaders across the country to launch the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration. The Alliance is urging Congress to pass bipartisan legislation before January 19, 2018 to protect the young immigrants knows as Dreamers from deportation.

Alliance representatives issued a letter to Congressional leaders on January 11, in which they stated, “As leaders of institutions that play a vital role in unleashing human potential, strengthening and enriching local communities, and securing our nation’s well-being and prosperity, we take seriously our responsibility to address public policy issues that are inconsistent with our purposes and values as educational institutions, our commitment to our students, and our nation’s heritage as a land of opportunity for those who come to this country in search of a better life for themselves and their children.”

“Shoreline Community College offers steadfast support for all of our students, including undocumented and immigrant students. We stand by DACA recipients and remain committed to keeping our doors wide open to them, because we know that our quality of life in Washington improves when everyone has access to education,” said President Roberts.

Shoreline Community College Suspends Women’s Basketball 2017-18 Season

Based on low participation and a multitude of athlete injuries, Shoreline Community College and the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) mutually agreed that suspending the Women’s Basketball 2017-18 season would be best.

“We highly praise the perseverance our student-athletes demonstrated under challenging circumstances,” said Steve Eskridge, Director of Athletics. “It takes time to develop a rhythm as a team, and these players showed amazing determination and spirit in facing off against more seasoned NWAC programs. We also greatly appreciate and want to thank everyone who supported the team this year.”

“Newly hired Head Coach, Amy Donovan, is already at work building the 2018-19 Women’s Basketball PhinNation season,” said Eskridge.

Seasons Greetings from President Roberts and the Board of Trustees
