Admission is free for families enrolled in SCC Preschool Coops; the General Public is encouraged to make a donation at the door.

Recent research has shown that children have very complex understandings of differences and stereotypes. Far from being color-blind, most children are aware of how their own skin color is an advantage or disadvantage. They also judge their peers based on stereotypes that adults might like to believe they are unaware of. Because of this, it is important to give children anti-bias messages, through actions and words, to actively counter what they are witnessing in the world.

Ilsa Govan, M.A. is a co-founder of Cultures Connecting. She has more than fifteen years of experience as a classroom teacher and anti-racist community activist. Ilsa worked as an Equity and Race Specialist for Seattle Public Schools, addressing institutional racism in a large organization. She has also served on the planning teams of the Seattle Race Conference and the White Privilege Conference. Ilsa earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from Western Washington University and her Master’s Degree in Bicultural Human Development from Pacific Oaks College Northwest.

While tickets are not required, we recommend you register for the event through Eventbrite to receive updates and reminders. This event is FREE for families enrolled in SCC Preschool Coops. This event is also open to the general public and we ask that you consider making a donation at the door.

Hosted by SCC Parent Education Program and the seven off-campus SCC Parent/Child Preschool Co-ops.

Students are chosen by their instructors to perform at the recitals and the criteria require students to have been involved in a music ensemble throughout the quarter.

For both these performances, this our students’ time to shine in the spotlight and to have an opportunity to perform in front of their peers. This is an invaluable experience for our students to build confidence musically through focused preparation, and the opportunity to perform in front of an audience helps them develop their stage presence. Everyone is welcome to attend in support of our student performers.

Call for Proposals – SCC Teaching & Learning Conference April 20 (March 29 deadline!)

Hello,

SCC is hosting its second annual Teaching & Learning Conference April 20 and 21, 2017.  We are calling for session proposals. All employees are welcome to present at a session!

The focus will be high engagement practices with students in both the classroom and 1:1 environment.

Consider the following:

·         Maybe you work with a specific population of students and want to share more about their experience as a student at SCC and how one may better engage and connect with the students you serve.

·         Is there an area of interest you are just dying to let more people know about. Maybe around assessment, teaching and learning, building community, college readiness and success, online experience, student experience – you name it – we probably want to know more!

·         Want to build community within our own community of SCC employees? Interested in hosting an informal conversation about a particular practice or quandary?

If one or more of those bullets peak your interest – you may want to consider presenting solo or join with others to offer dynamic opportunity for learning!
