Canvas Maintenance

We appreciate your patience while we have a short maintenance on Canvas on Wednesday, Dec.17, from 10-11 a.m.

During this time, logging in to Canvas may be unavailable.

Please contact eLearning@shoreline.edu or (206) 546-6966 if you have questions.

Faculty Learning Community

This year at SCC, we are fortunate to have been granted funding from the state to have a Faculty Learning Community on the topic of Online Course Accessibility.  This community is not limited to faculty alone – it is open to staff and admins as well and we have a varied and motivated group already assembled from across campus.

However, we have a lot of work to do and welcome more interested participants!!  We are meeting twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th Mondays from 2:30-4 p.m.   Next Meeting: Monday, Nov. 24.  Please contact Amy Rovner in eLearning for more information.

This FLC funding has also paid for our group’s virtual attendance at the foremost national conference on accessing technology in higher ed, titled Accessing Higher Ground.  Our virtual ticket enables us to live stream the conference as it happens this week in Colorado.  We have reserved the conference room in the 1200 building for Friday, Nov. 21 from 8 -11:45 a.m.  Please check out the attached schedule of events and sign up for those that you want to view with us and we’ll save you a seat!

Panopto Maintenance this Saturday

Panopto will be down on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 5 p.m. for up to 3 hours. We expect only a short interruption for finding and viewing sessions during this time, with a longer interruption for processing new sessions. You will still be able to record offline and upload later, but there may be brief delays before the new recordings are available for viewing.

Please contact eLearning if you have questions

Ask Ellen – eLearning Peer Mentor

Melleneet Ellen Chun-Ying Hsu, an online student at Shoreline, who joined eLearning Services as an eLearning Student Peer Mentor in 2013. Since then she has helped students in more than 100 online classes with an “Ask Ellen” discussion board where students post questions about the learning management system, Canvas. Students often tell Ellen that they never have enough time but her advice is:

  • Read the syllabus carefully.
  • Plan ahead by reviewing the upcoming modules and keeping track of upcoming assignments in a calendar.
  • Ask questions early about big assignments and work on the assignment weeks ahead of the deadline.
  • Post to discussions early so your classmates can respond to you.

Study Ahead = Bonus Week. Ellen found that keeping to her “Plan Ahead” method gave her a bonus week at the end of the quarter. While others were working all night and stressing about submission deadlines, she was finished with her classes!
