Virtual college joins Office of Academic & Student Affairs

Whether it is on campus, online or a combination of both, Shoreline Community College continues to integrate the ways students can access the education and training they need to change their lives.

Three years ago, the college launched the virtual-college initiative to expand the number of degrees and certificates offered online and enhance the quality of the online experience for students. At the time, Ann Garnsey-Harter, then director of eLearning, was named director of the virtual-college effort and reported to then-Vice President for Administrative Services Daryl Campbell. Campbell is now Interim President of the college.

Starting July 1, 2014, Garnsey-Harter and the virtual college will come under the wing of the Office of the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. Bob Francis currently holds that post on an interim basis.

“This is an appropriate evolution of the virtual-college initiative,” said Garnsey-Harter, who will retain her current title of Interim Executive Director for the Virtual College and Resource Development. “This further integrates the initiative into the college.”

This past spring, Garnsey-Harter and others across the campus reviewed the virtual college “blueprint” that launched the initiative in 2011-12 and took stock of the current online-education landscape. The result was a revised plan that focuses on student success and access and “strives to extend campus services and instruction by utilizing virtual technologies.”

Shoreline faculty members are on the forefront of innovative ways to increase student success and access, Garnsey-Harter said. “We now have more than 25 degrees and certificates fully online because our faculty members are embracing technology and making it work for students,” she said, adding that the number of hybrid classes – where some learning is in the classroom and some online – is also increasing.

This past winter quarter, Shoreline participated in a Gates Foundation-funded program for two classes that used the latest software technology to adapt the learning experience to each student’s needs. “Shoreline was part of a select group to gain experience with adaptive learning because our faculty are open to using technology to help students,” Garnsey-Harter said.

Starting summer quarter, the college launched a limited live, online-chat option for academic advising. “Online services aren’t just for online students,” Garnsey-Harter said. “The virtual college, virtual campus, effort has benefits for all students.”

Congratulations to Judy Penn and Jerry Baker for their Quality Matters certified courses!

This June, two more courses became Quality Matters certified:  “BIOL 150 Epidemics and Culture” designed by Judy Penn, and “BUS 143 – Materials Management” designed by Jerry Baker.  For those not familiarized with the program, Quality Matters (QM) consists of a nationally recognized peer review process designed to certify the quality of online courses and online components.

Judy Penn has been teaching at Shoreline for the past 24 years.  She is an active member of our academic community and, as a Biology and Microbiology professor, she has been the recipient of both the “Faculty Excellence Award” and “Leadership and Innovation in eLearning Award.”  Judy facilitates the Shoreline eLearning Community, serves on the SBCTC Faculty Learning Community Task Force, and is certified as a Quality Matters Peer Reviewer.   Prior to contributing to Shoreline, Judy was associate faculty at North Seattle Community College.  At the beginning of her career, she was a Research Associate in Pathology and Endocrinology at the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, where she spent six years conducting research.  Judy has extensively published and presented in her field, including co-authoring the books Get Ready for Microbiology and Anatomy and Physiology for English Language Learners.

Jerry Baker teaches purchasing, materials management, contract administration, logistics and transportation, among other business administration courses. He joined Shoreline in the fall of 1998, after having taught purchasing, marketing, and production management at Elizabethtown College, Pennsylvania State University, Edmonds Community College, and Arizona State University. He is also the author of three reference books and numerous articles about purchasing, inventory control and supply chain management. In addition to having been the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the National Association of Purchasing Management (NAPM) for eighteen years, retiring in 1998.  Note that BUS 143 is indeed Jerry’s third QM certified course.  Both “BUS 141 – Purchasing and Supply Management Fundamental” and “BUS 142 – Sourcing and Supplier Relations Fundamentals” have also met the quality standards established by the QM program.

Congratulations to both Judy Penn and Jerry Baker for their exceptional contribution to online education at Shoreline!

Canvas Housekeeping Reminders

canvasThis is a friendly reminder to perform a little housekeeping in your Canvas account. June 27th is just a suggested “gitterdun by date”. You can add that to your calendar if it helps.

End of the Spring Quarter:

Since grades are turned in, it’s time to download your grade books to save the student data in case it’s needed in the future.  This is quick to do in Canvas and generates a .CSV file that can be opened in Excel.  Click here for detailed instructions.

Beginning of Summer Quarter:

Summer session begins on Monday, June 23 so remember to “Publish” your Canvas Course so students can access your content and receive your Announcements and Messages.  You can publish anytime, from now until 9 a.m. on Monday, June 23.   Click here for detailed instructions on publishing.

Canvas Draft State Training & Open Lab

canvasHave you heard that there is now a “Draft State” in Canvas?  Come and see what it’s all about at this training and Open Lab time.

“Draft State” is great change to the Canvas platform that makes it easy to truly hide content under development (ie: in a draft state).

If you can’t make it in person watch this overview video from Canvas and then contact eLearning Services if you have any questions!
