Tegrity update

Access to the Tegrity recordings you made while using Blackboard will not go away when our Blackboard classrooms are gone; the Tegrity sessions are located outside of Blackboard on a separate Tegrity server: shoreline.tegrity.com. To access, go to shoreline.tegrity.com and enter your Blackboard username and password; Blackboard username is first letter of first name + first 4 letters of last name + last 4 numbers of SID and password is last 5 numbers of SID. Example: jsmit4567.
The Tegrity recordings you made while using Blackboard will be combined in your Canvas classrooms with the Tegrity recordings you have been making while using Canvas.  This process is expected to be complete by November 15, 2013.  Stay tuned for updates.

Please contact eLearning@shoreline.edu if you have questions

Canvas to be updated

The next Canvas update will be on Saturday, Oct. 26; there are improvements to:

Conversations (Message inbox)

  • Opt-In to New Conversation style, click the question icon and select the Try New Conversations option. Courses drop-down menu, you can filter messages by course
  • Automatically link URLs in messages. Conversations that contain a URL within a message will display the URL as a clickable link. This feature only applies after the message has been sent and appears in the Inbox.

For Math questions:

  • Relative Error in Quiz Formula Questions. Canvas will compute responses for Quiz Formula questions based on relative error in addition to absolute error. Margins of error can now be created as a percentage or as a point value (up to three decimal places).

Improvement to Mobile Login page

  • Our moblie login page will now look the same as our web login page.

Blackboard is going away: save your material now!

Our Blackboard contract is coming to an end and it is time to get your course materials out of Blackboard before it goes away!

The deadline for completing the export process is November 22nd.
NOTE: If you have students with incompletes in Blackboard, please download the grade center from the Blackboard class. (Instructions at the end of this document). After you have the grades saved,  email eLearning@shoreline.edu to discuss how to add the student to a Canvas class to finish the necessary work.

Many of you have already moved your course materials into Canvas but if you need to retrieve old course materials from Blackboard, please go to https://shoreline.blackboard.com and look for your classes. You need an export file, not an archive file from Blackboard to upload into Canvas; archive files do not load into Canvas.

Here are the steps to export your course materials from Blackboard and then how to import the content into Canvas:

1. Here is the link, https://shoreline.blackboard.com; login with Blackboard username and password.

How to Export a Blackboard Course in Common Cartridge Format (works better than Blackboard zipped file)

2. In the Control Panel, expand the Packages and Utilities section and select Export/Archive Course.

3. Click Export Common Cartridge.

Export the package in Common Cartridge 1.1 format

4. Click Submit.

5. You will receive and email that the export is complete; return to Control Panel > Packages and Utilities > Export/Archive course

6. Right click on the file link and save the zipped export file to your computer or thumb drive.

NOTE:

Files, items, discussion forums, web links (URLs), and assessments will be exported, but certain components may be excluded (for instance, topics in discussion forums are exported, but grading, which is not supported by Canvas is not).

Canvas has fewer question types, so exported tests and pools will not include incompatible questions.

Common Cartridge exports a course into a single folder of content. Each content area is then exported as a sub-folder inside the main course folder.

How to Import Blackboard course materials to Canvas:

1. Login to Canvas, https://canvas.shoreline.edu with your Canvas username and password.

2. On the Canvas Dashboard, click on the Start a New Course button,  , located on the right hand side of the page.

3. Name your course, Course Name Blackboard Content (or something that indicates Blackboard content) and then click on Create course.

4. The new course will open and “Next Steps”,  appears at the bottom of the screen. Click on Import Content.

5. On the Content Type drop-down menu, select Common Cartridge,  and then click Import.

6. Check the course content after you see the “Completed” button on the Import Content page.

How to download grades in Blackboard:

1. Get into your Blackboard classroom.

2. Click on “Control Panel.”

3. Click on “Grade Center, Full Grade Center.”

4. Click Work Offline   Download in upper right corner of the Grade Center.

5. Select Full Grade Center, Delimiter type, Tab, Include Hidden Information

6. Save location is my computer.

7. Submit

Remember, Blackboard is going away and we will no longer have the ability to access Blackboard courses.

Please contact eLearning@shoreline.edu if you have questions about the process.

Shoreline eLearning community getting together

The Shoreline eLearning Community will meet on Friday (Oct 18) from 1:30-3pm in Room 2926.

This meeting will focus on tips for improving online discussions!   A few of us attended a session at NW eLearning Conference last week that really had some great ideas.  We plan to share those at this meeting.

Everyone is welcome!  Bring your device, a beverage and we are working on providing snacks!

Hope to see you there!   If you can’t make it, but would like access to our group’s Canvas Classroom, please email jpenn@shoreline.edu
