We’ve updated our website (Thanks to Linda Weir and Sean Duke!).  It includes the budget calendar, an aSAP roadmap, an aSAP form, and the feedback form SPBC will be using for aSAPs reviews.  The meeting is open to all, please forward this to anyone who might be interested.

Social media in the classroom

Good morning, Colleagues!

The Shoreline eLearning Community invites you to attend the next meeting on Friday, March 7, 1:30-3 p.m. in Room 2926.

Kira Wennstrom will show us how she uses Peer Reviews in Canvas.

Then, Stephanie Diemel will share her experiences with using social media in her courses. Do you use social media in your teaching? If so, we encourage you to attend and share your best practices with us.  These are very informal meetings…no fancy presentations required.

Anyone who’s interested in these topics is welcome to attend!  Snacks provided!

More than the mirror

mirrorThis week is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week and counseling services will be offering a workshop on improving body image this Thursday, Feb. 27, at 12-1 p.m. in the PUB Quiet Dining Room.  Below are a few astounding statistics, and resources regarding college students and Eating Disorders:

Eating Disorders and Body Image concerns are highly relevant for the college population! Did you know:

  • The rate of eating disorders among college students has risen to 10 to 20 percent of women and 4 to 10 percent of men (NEDA, 2013).
  • Full-blown eating disorders typically begin between 18 and 21 years of age (Hudson, 2007).
  • 35 percent of “normal” dieters progress to pathological dieting. Of those, 20-25 percent progress to partial or full-syndrome eating disorders (Shisslak & Crago, 1995).
  • Eating disorders are the mental illness with the highest mortality rate (Arcelus, 2011).
  • Help-seeking decreases significantly when people are not aware of the options available to them (Ben-Porath, 2002; Friedman, 2009; Nolen-Hoeksema, 2006; Gould, 2007).

Please know that help is available!
