Campus Updates 9/5/24

Events and News

Hey all! I hope you are doing well. It’s been a full week here in the President’s Office, though we have missed Lori who has been in Hawaii. I’m happy to have her back today and look forward the hearing some stories about her time back home!

I wanted to start this week’s message by again thanking our Classified Union leadership and our team in Human Resources for coordinating the first Classified Staff/Admin training day. I have already received some positive input and constructive ideas to improve this and other related events throughout the year. The progress made on training specifically for classified staff and administrators is significant and really appreciated. I enjoyed connecting with those I don’t see often, and it was a bonus to spend some time together to learn about one another.

Thank you also to the team representing Shoreline CC at the Sound Transit Celebration last Friday! And wow- did you see we have a campus shuttle all lined up with a stop at the “Shoreline North/185th” station?!? Great job to Student Services, the Associated Student Government (ASG) & Safety & Security for this partnership!

Staff representing Shoreline at the Lightrail Opening

One of the projects I have been working on this week (through the Strategic Action Teams) is on improving data we have about our students which led to meetings with three College partners—including representatives from the K-12 school district, the City of Shoreline, and the State Board. All three meetings were fruitful in both understanding the data we currently have that can be used to enact progress, data that doesn’t yet exist but could, as well as some systemic barriers that are in place that impact our work—particularly in regard to students who don’t live in Shoreline or Lake Forest Park but nevertheless are here (and certainly we are glad they are). I’ll keep you posted as this progresses. We will also be posting strategic plan updates in the monthly Board reports starting in September so you can keep up with those details there if you wish.

This week brought numerous one-on-one meetings with members of the Executive Team (ET), a Board member, our Assistant Attorney General and completing FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) trainings. Today, I will be joining other College personnel for a meeting with Shoreline Public Schools personnel, will speak to a college president about resources/trainings on participatory governance (as part of strategic plan work), and finally, receive lessons in Chinese to help prepare for a trip in October.

Have a great weekend!

Cheers,

Jack
