Campus Updates 8/1/24

Events and News

Hey folks- hope all are doing well. It has been a busy week!

This week we hosted a wonderful groundbreaking ceremony for our new Bracken building- a building that embodies the best of what community colleges offer- career training, transfer, and inspiration! The building will house our stellar Math, Music, and Nursing programs! We were really happy to have State Representative Cindy Ryu give a brief welcome as well as Shoreline Community College trustees Rebecca Ringer & James Stark, and new Vice President of Instruction (VPI) Ben Weng. Thank you to Cat Chiappa and Wendy Coates and their teams for coordinating the event.

Did you hear Rashawn Smith won an award this past weekend from the Honda Professional Automotive Career Training (PACT)? The award is the “Challenging Spirit Award” which recognizes leaders for support and performance “exceeding Honda’s expectations in response to extraordinary requirements.” Rashawn has made major positive changes to the Auto program and has led during COVID and other College challenges. Even given those challenges, we reported the highest cert completions in the state! He’s the faculty lead for our Black Student Union (BSU) and just joined our Faculty Senate as the new vice chair. I am excited to work with him in that leadership role as well. If you see Rashawn, please congratulate him, and thank him for his inspirational leadership work for the College and especially for our students!

This week we also had a GREAT meeting with amazing leaders from King County, the City of Shoreline, the Shoreline Community College Foundation, Shoreline CC Board members and Blanton Turner (the property management firm for the student residence hall) to discuss our shared Housing Insecurity Pilot. Using funds from the county, we are fully funding housing for 3 (soon to be 4) housing-insecure students in our residence hall- right here on campus. This gives students access to wrap-around services provided by the county AND the College. We will be watching progress and hope to increase opportunities with more students soon. Keep an eye out for the press release…I’m just excited! While it’s a small step in this housing crisis, it matters. Thank you Guru Dorje and team for all your amazing work and leadership!!

I haven’t been sharing much of my weekend shenanigans lately- mostly because I have either been at events (which I do share) or I’m not doing much that is interesting!  However, I had an “interesting” thing happen on Saturday last weekend that I did want to share. My wife and I were in the car going to some yard sales (we like to do that kind of thing) when we saw a dog running around in the street. A couple cars had pulled over and it was one of those “oh my gosh should we do something or do others have this handled etc.” moments. Well, as many of you know, I am a bit of a dog fanatic (as is my wife) so we pulled over also. In the next few minutes, a group of about 8 diverse people (ranging in a variety of ways) cornered the pup in a parking lot so that she couldn’t run back into the street. Somehow without knowing each other at all, we all came up with roles and a plan (“I’m calling for backup, I’ll get the backside, I will try and get her to calm down,” etc.). We were there about 20 minutes and eventually connected her with her owner (she had got out from a hole in the fence). We smiled and thanked each other and went our separate ways.

I know it’s silly to use this metaphor as some grand metaphor for the possibility of people collaborating toward a common goal or vision. But it was a powerful few moments and it reminded me of the incredible work we have done together as a community at Shoreline, and how powerful it can be when we focus, coordinate, and act in the spirit of our vision for students and each other.

Have a great weekend.

Cheers,

Jack

Campus Updates 7/25/24

Hey folks, hope all are well! Unfortunately, I spent the first part of this week sick. I’m feeling better, but still have that post-illness low-key feeling (which I am not a fan of). I’m hanging in and hoping none of you have had it.

I had a good meeting this week with new colleagues from the University of Washington Office of Undergraduate Research. We’re hoping to find ways to support our wonderful Honors program and to support faculty who have an interest in promoting research in their disciplines. It was a great meeting, and I can see some tangible projects blossoming – keep an eye out!

We also had a GREAT meeting yesterday with amazing leaders from King County, City of Shoreline, Shoreline Community College Foundation, SCC Board members Rebecca Ringer & Jamie Stark, and Blanton Turner to discuss our shared Housing Insecurity Pilot.

Oh, and fun fact – you may remember we recently became an Amazon Career Choice college. We now have two students from Amazon at Shoreline for summer courses!

Have a great week.

Cheers,

Jack

Accreditation

  • Our institutional accreditation cycle with the NWCCU is 7 years long (see details).

Enrollments

The daily summer enrollment report is open to all employees.

Foundation

Donors to the SCC Foundation helped make $150,000 available to support students who would be the most negatively impacted by the delayed and complicated FAFSA rollout this year. Just over $60,000 was expended this summer to help students pay for rent, childcare, food, and transportation.

Donor funding was also able to provide an additional $10,000 in emergency assistance through the Benefits Hub to help fill the gap in summer United Way funding. Our Benefits Hub is an important safety net for students. Making sure that adequate funding is available year-round is a priority for the Foundation’s 24/25 fundraising plan.

SCHOLARSHIP EVALUATORS WANTED! We’ll be starting the Fall 24 scholarship review and award process soon! If you want to help, please email Kara KHaney@shoreline.edu.

Business & Administrative Services

An updated Credit Card Purchase Authorization Form is available on the College’s Intranet (see screen snip below) as an entirely digital file with built-in signature capture via Adobe Sign. Please discontinue using the 2008 paper version as it has been retired.

Technology Support Services (TSS):

As part of the College’s cybersecurity enhancements resulting from the March 2022 Ransomware event and to comply with insurance underwriting requirements, here is a summary of upcoming enhancements to help us continue to be good stewards of our employees’ and students’ information and data:

  • August 1st: we will be doing a campus-wide Password Reset and requiring “strong passwords” with minimum requirements of 12 characters, 1 capital letter, 1 number, 1 special character with password resets occurring every 180 days or 90 days if you have access to credit card numbers for PCI compliance.
  • August 5th: LastPass Password Management Software to help manage login and promote strong passwords.
  • August 15th: Printing Code Signup to allow document printing over Wi-Fi via email to any campus-wide Ricoh Multi-Function Printer (MFP).

Details will be forthcoming on these exciting enhancements as we move closer to these dates.

Bldg. 5000 Elevator – Service Outage

Dear Campus Community,

Last Thursday, 7/24, the 5000 Building (FOSS) elevator was taken out of service due to an unknown issue. An elevator technician responded that day but found the solution required a new part. When the technician returned this week, it was discovered that the wrong part was ordered. The elevator in Bldg. 5000 will be out of service until the correct part is received and installed; we are still waiting for a timeline from the contractor. I apologize that notification was not sent out sooner, it was originally expected to be a same day fix.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email at gcranson@shoreline.edu

Respectfully,

Gregory Cranson
