Campus Updates 7/18/24

Events and News

Good afternoon, folks, hope you are well.  It has been a week of great news here at SCC!  I mean come on, enrollment showing we are 9% up AND we are no longer are on warning?  You folks are doing such a great job!!!  More info on these items below, but I wanted you to know I am noticing all the wonderful, creative things everyone is doing around campus.  I really appreciate everyone’s hard work and dedication.

This past week was spent mostly here at Shoreline.  We started our Strategic Action Teams. (and are off to a good start) and are moving forward on various projects across the College.  There were also a couple of fun items that took place as well recently that I wanted to mention. A handful of you took part in Lori’s Bubble extravaganza to celebrate the long July 4th weekend (which was really cool).  ET has also started incorporating 15 minutes of card games into our meetings (per the recommendation of Jeff Harry).  Any of you doing anything in your regular meetings to break-up the mood a bit?  I found this to be really fun, even though Wendy Coates bankrupted me in Monopoly Deal!

Lastly, I attended a Shoreline Chamber of Commerce luncheon to hear a recap of the City’s Strategic Plan, and connect with colleagues.  The Chamber does a great job engaging folks in various ways, and I really enjoyed being there.

Here is the July video update for you:

Accreditation

  • Our Accreditation page now reflects that the sanction of warning was removed by our institutional accreditors based on the April 2024 Mid-Cycle report and visit!  The accreditors said it was not expected for a college to get a sanction lifted in just one year’s time.
  • This positive outcome reflects the countless hours of hard work done by so many across the College.
  • Special thanks to:
    • The Accreditation Committee and additional contributors to the accreditation report (as listed on pgs. 4-5).
    • The ~70 employees who were interviewed by the accreditors, as well as those who helped prepare for and support those meetings.
  • We now are in Year 4 of our seven year accreditation cycle with reports due each year. Our next scheduled accreditation visit will be fall 2027.
  • We now have just two accreditation recommendations, in which we are substantially in compliance with our accreditation standards but need to demonstrate improvement.

-Sincerely, Ann Garnsey-Harter, Accreditation Liaison Officer

Fall Scholarship window is open…what does this mean?

  1. It means that students can apply for scholarships to help pay for Fall classes – Please note, 90% of these scholarships are need based – so every student should apply!!  https://www.shoreline.edu/foundation/scholarships.aspx
  1. It means you can sign up to be a scholarship evaluator! Help SCC students get the funding they need and learn more about the scholarship process. Let Wendy (wcoates@shoreline.edu) know if you want to help!

Great job for a fundraiser open – do you know someone who is mission focused and has development experience? If yes, PLEASE SHARE! The Foundation is hiring an Annual Fund Manager.

Thank you! To the hiring committee folks who helped select our new Program Coordinator, Kara Haney! Kara is organized, system focused, kind, and a great fit for our office! I am thrilled she said yes. Please join me in congratulating Kara for her new role… CONGRATS KARA!

Student Services:

At CECO we have seen an increase in interest in emergency services and curiosity from students who never thought about it. With our grant funding we were able to partner with Michael Boehm with Workforce Education and develop a program with Shoreline Fire to meet this need. We have partnered with Shoreline Community College’s continuing ed class and piloted a class that is open to the public, CECO and Shoreline CC students, centering students who are underrepresented, with IEP and 504 designations, but open to all! (we have had lots of women join; one wants to be a firefighter now!)

Events and News

Hey folks, hope you are well and had a great long 4th of July weekend. Mine was low-key (which was great) but I did see a movie, which is rare for me. I saw the film Martha, which I didn’t know much about but really enjoyed. It is about a woman (I believe in her 80s) who gets taken advantage of by a phone scam and decides to get revenge! It does a wonderful job tackling human agency and ageism and includes some generational pokes coupled with an uplifting story.

This week has been mostly business at the College, helping to onboard our new VPs, going through emails, and getting planning activities ready for this month to start work on our Strategic Action Teams.

I went to the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Wednesday.  I attended with Wendy Coates and saw Cameron Dollar and Lauren Hadley (who is active with the chamber and the city) there too.  It was a great overview of the city strategic plan, and we appreciated the updates from the chamber. The best part was meeting a couple folks who shared stories about their children going to Shoreline (one person had all four kids come here). I always love finding those connections and hearing the stories!

Cheers,

Jack
