Important Facilities Updates- Please Read Carefully

Hello Campus Community,

Please see some important updates from Facilities below.  These updates are for work being done between 4/23-4/30.  Please read carefully.

Water Shutdown Tomorrow 4/23 in Building 2900 from 6:30-8:30am

The water to 2900 will be shutdown on 4/23 from 6:30am to 8:30am.  This is to finalize punch list items for the Cedar building.

Summary of Planned Contractor Activity at Cedar/6000 Building, Access Requests Next Week, 4/22 to 4/26

Forma has scheduled concrete on the following days within the construction zone.  For Tuesday, 4/23, from 8am – 3pm, Forma will be patching asphalt at the NE corner of building 2300 and at the parking lot/concrete path connections on the West side of the building.  There will be some odor from the new asphalt.  The walking path to the SW door of 6000 will remain open.   For Thursday, 4/25, from 3pm-5pm, concrete cure seal will be installed in Phase 2 site adjacent to building 2200.  The sealant does give off an odor which is not hazardous to people walking outside by the construction fence at buildings 2300 and 2900.  Please avoid the area around the construction zone.  Employees with accommodations in place impacted by the concrete sealant application process can contact HR at hr@shoreline.edu for any support needed. Any other employees potentially impacted by the smell are welcome to work with their supervisor to explore remote work options noting that campus services must remain open and staffed during this time.

Roofing Projects- Lift Onsite 4/30/24

We are in the process of gathering information to start a few roofing projects on campus.  Our on-call Architect will have a lift brought onsite on Tuesday, 4/30, to conduct some exploratory work on the 3000-building soffit.  The lift will be in place at 7am and should be removed by 1pm.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Kimberlee Clark

Introducing Dr. Pangyen (Ben) Weng as the new Vice President of Instruction

Shoreline Community College is pleased to announce that Dr. Pangyen (Ben) Weng has accepted the role of Vice President for Instruction.

Dr. Weng will start on July 1, 2024, and brings twenty years of experience in higher education to the role. “I am thrilled to be part of Dr. Kahn’s administration and to lead Shoreline’s outstanding faculty,” Ben expressed about his new role. “Together, we are committed to expanding Shoreline’s transformative and equitable educational opportunities for students.”

For the past six years Ben has served as the STEM Dean at Minneapolis College in Minnesota. During his tenure, he and his faculty launched innovative curriculum initiatives to tackle the myriad challenges facing higher education. Notably, the Minneapolis Math and Science Pathways, along with the Minneapolis Open-Access IT Degrees, resulted in increased enrollment, narrowed achievement gaps, and greater student interest in STEM courses.

Before assuming his deanship, Dr. Weng spent fourteen years as a mathematics professor at three different four-year universities. At Metropolitan State University in Minnesota, he chaired the mathematics department, pioneered new degree programs, and played a pivotal role in establishing the state’s universal 2+2 transfer agreements of math degrees between all the public universities and two-year colleges. His teaching repertoire spanned the entire spectrum of mathematics, from developmental to advanced levels.

Dr. Weng holds a doctoral degree in mathematics from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from National Taiwan University in Taipei. His expertise is in real analysis and differential equations, a field where nothing is taken for granted unless logically proven to be true. While Ben’s training lies in theoretical mathematics, his greatest passion is sharing the joy of math with others. In 2022, he authored “Math Excursions for Liberal Arts,” a textbook tailored for non-STEM students.

Originally from Taiwan, Ben came to the US to pursue advanced studies over 25 years ago. He has a wife and three kids. In his free time, he enjoys cooking Taiwanese beef noodles or Japanese yakisoba, playing his 1993 Yamaha silver flute, and hiking with his family. He looks forward to exploring the scenic trails in the region on his bike or rollerblades.

Press Release: Shoreline Community College Announces First-Ever Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene

Shoreline Community College (Shoreline) is proud to announce the launch of its Bachelor of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene (BASDH) program, the first bachelor’s degree offering at the college. This innovative program aims to tackle the pressing need for qualified dental hygienists in Washington State, particularly in rural areas where access to dental care is limited.

“This program is directly at the heart of our mission,” shared Dr. Lucas Rucks, Acting Vice President of Instruction at Shoreline. “We are using data to inform decisions, leveraging employer feedback, and putting out high-quality graduates to serve our communities exactly where they are needed most.”

With data indicating a national shortage of dental hygienists and an increasing demand for their services, Shoreline Community College is stepping up to bridge this gap by expanding its dental hygiene program. The BASDH program builds upon the existing curriculum, making it both easy and convenient for students while ensuring they receive high-quality education to meet the demands of the profession.

“Washington state has had an urgent need for dental care and dental care professionals for quite some time. We are thrilled with our partnership with the University of Washington for the location of this program and the launch of this new bachelor’s degree program in dental hygiene will be a huge boon to the state. Shoreline is known for a stellar dental hygiene program and this expansion will help us have a broader impact on the region,” said Dr. Jack Kahn, President of Shoreline Community College about the new program.

The BASDH program is a culmination of years of dedication and perseverance, overcoming significant obstacles to reach fruition. This degree maintains the rigorous standards of the existing dental hygiene program, with students completing 119 dental hygiene credits over the 8-quarter program. The addition of the bachelor’s program aligns with Shoreline Community College’s commitment to workforce development and addressing critical needs in the healthcare sector.

Starting summer quarter 2024, the BASDH program will accept its first cohort of 20 students, who will graduate in June 2026. “We are excited to offer this opportunity to our students, as it will open up new possibilities for continuing education and work in the community, “ said Dr. Nikki Honey and Lori Simicich- Co-Directors of Shoreline’s Dental Hygiene Program.

Technology Support Services (TSS)

Three items for this week’s update:

  1. TSS received an update from our third-party partner on the Wired Network restoration project’s status.  We were previously scheduled to begin work on the week of April 22nd; however, we have been informed that the Union Local 46 has gone on strike and this unfortunately involves the workers that were scheduled to being here on campus. They are anticipating an agreement to come together soon, so we are tentatively scheduling work to begin the week of April 29th. Once we have confirmation of this start date, an updated communication will be sent including timelines for each building.
  1. TSS has created a spreadsheet that includes the location and information of all physical Microsoft Teams phones across campus. This information was requested for anyone who needs to use a phone but does not have a license for Microsoft Teams (i.e., Students, Guests, etc.).  Although a phone number is listed, you must check with each department on availability.  As new phones are rolled out across campus, this list will be updated. The spreadsheet can be found at the following link:  VoIP phone devices across campus (location).xlsx
  1. TSS has received reports that some flash drives are not being recognized by the new Ricoh machines across campus. Please see the instructions below if you are having issues with your flash drive being recognized on the new machines:

IMPORTANT: The following steps will erase all data on the flash drive. Please temporarily move ALL files from the flash drive onto a folder on your computer, only AFTER this task reformat the flash drive with FAT32 File System.

To reformat the flash drive:

For PC:

  1. Open the File Explorer and right-click on your Flash Drive.
  2. On the popup menu click “Format”.
  3. Make sure that “FAT32 File System” is selected.
  4. Uncheck the “Quick Format” option, if checked.
  5. Click “Start”.
  6. After it is finished, close the “Format” window.
  7. Your flash drive is now formatted. You can now move your files from the temporary folder back onto your flash drive.

              For Mac:

              1. Open the Disk Utility app and right-click on your Flash Drive.
              2. On the popup menu click “Erase”.
              3. Make sure that “MS-DOS (FAT)” is selected.
              4. Click “Erase”.
              5. After it is finished, close the “Disk Utility” app.
              6. Your Flash Drive is now formatted correctly.

                         Notes:

                        • After completing the above steps, if your flash drive is still not recognized by the Ricoh machine, you may need to use a different brand of flash drive (SanDisk, Kingston, etc.).
                        • Please keep in mind that flash drives with a larger amount of data may take a little longer to be recognized. If you have a large drive, please give a little extra time for the Ricoh machine to recognize the device.
                        • If you need help with formatting a flash drive, please contact TSS for assistance.
