One-on-One Music Lessons Available at Shoreline Community College

Collage of different musical instruments, including: trumpet, piano, guitar, and drums.

This summer, Shoreline Community College is offering personalized music learning experiences. Through Private Music Instruction, students ages 15 and up can receive individual lessons in a wide range of instruments and voice.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced musician looking to refine your skills, Shoreline’s accomplished faculty offer instruction in piano, voice, guitar, bass, ukulele, woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion. Lessons are tailored to the student’s level, interests, and goals, making it one of the most flexible and supportive music programs in the area.

Each enrollment includes 5 hours of private instruction, with the option to schedule either ten 30-minute sessions or five 60-minute sessions. Lessons are scheduled directly with the instructor after registration and typically take place in Shoreline’s #800 Music Building, a dedicated space for high-quality musical learning.

The fee is $399 per 5-hour session (just $39.90 per lesson), and students can register for multiple sessions per quarter with faculty approval. Interested students should reach out to jkashiwa@shoreline.edu for availability and instructor placement.

Introducing the Dolphie AI Chatbot Program

We want to let you know about an exciting behaviorally smart SMS chatbot program we are implementing this year to help us maintain connections with our students, increase persistence, and retain them. We have partnered with EdSights for this program; here is a quick video overview about them.

EdSights has built a chatbot that will interact with our students via text message and will be named after our mascot, Dolphie.  The chatbot will check in with our students about their experience at Shoreline and will provide them with resources for any struggles they might face. In addition, just like “Siri” or “Alexa,” Dolphie can answer students’ questions across a broad range of campus topics specific to Shoreline.

We are bringing Dolphie to life as a chatbot as a way for us to provide additional support to students and meet them where they are by answering their questions and communicate important information in a more intentional and timely manner. It is also great for Dolphie to hear student feedback and create a virtual community.

Dolphie will send an introductory text message to students on July 2nd.

If you have any questions, or receive questions from students about the chatbot, please send them to navigate@shoreline.edu.

Campus Updates 6/26/2025

Well, it’s good to be back.  I was ill and out almost all of last week and missed a lot of important events, most notably graduation.  It’s the first graduation I have ever missed.  I streamed, though, and cheered everyone on.  I heard nothing but praise for this year’s event – many saying it was even more special than usual.  My thanks to the Commencement Committee and to Dr Ryan Aiello for doing my part (he was fantastic).

Coming back this week to a great opportunity for Dr. Lucas Rucks and I to be on the welcoming “Partner Panel” at the Muckleshoot Effective Teaching Institute with colleagues from Pierce College, University of Washington, Western Washington University, and Auburn District k-12.  We were thrilled to represent Shoreline and to meet so many wonderful leaders. We have an awesome team from SCC attending this week – I can’t wait to hear what ideas they bring back!

I’m now buried in emails and many other items but glad I’m on the mend.  Hope to see you on campus!

Cheers,

Jack

Business Administration

Evergreen Refreshments (Avanti Markets) has completed the self-service food equipment refresh in PUB Bldg. 9000 with new Pico Vision Coolers. The installation went well and there will be adjustments completed during the summer quarter:

  • Par levels: They will be working to add additional variety to the coolers. During the summer quarter, the coolers will be set to a lower volume, and as we move into fall, they will adjust.
  • Cooler Racks: The coolers were initially set up with shelving racks. They will be installing additional “pushers” and reconfiguring the layout.
  • Cabinetry: Cabinetry is on order, and installation is tentatively scheduled for July 11th

As a reminder, when a user scans their debit or credit card, a pre-authorization is triggered. As a result, a $10.00 pending charge may appear on their bank account. This is temporary and will adjust once the actual product charge is finalized.

For users that had a previous Avanti Card, Evergreen Refreshments is working on a process to refund balances to account holders.

Please see the “How to Use” diagram below for utilizing the new coolers. This is similar technology to the self-service beverage coolers at the Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks’ stadium.

Infographic featuring the following instructions for using Pico Vision vending machines: 1.	Scan. Tap/insert your card to unlock (or you can use Apple/Google Pay). 2.	Grab. Open and take your products. Change your mind? Simply put the product back in the same slot. 3.	Go. Close the door to finish. Prices will appear on the touchscreen.

A heartfelt thank you to the Commencement Committee for creating such a meaningful and memorable celebration. Shoreline’s student-first spirit was on full display. This is truly a community that lifts one another up, and the shared joy and support were powerful reminders of what makes SCC so special. We also appreciate the Committee’s efforts to help us raise awareness of our new and improved Alumni Network!

We are wrapping up awarding for the 2025-2026 scholarship cycle. We’re excited to see results from some of the improvements implemented this year. Some quick data:
