American Honors change – Building on a tradition of academic excellence in The Honors College at Shoreline

Dear Colleague,

On March 8, 2017, Quad Learning/American Honors and Shoreline Community College mutually agreed to end the American Honors Program at Shoreline in the 2016-2017 academic year.

Although our relationship with American Honors will conclude, Shoreline Community College will seamlessly continue to offer a high-quality honors experience with the launch of The Honors College at Shoreline. This decision was reached after we realized Shoreline’s internal enrollment management capabilities have increased in a way that enables us to sustain a robust honors program on our own.

Building on the strong foundation of faculty-driven honors programming over the past 11 years, The Honors College at Shoreline will deliver academic rigor, advising support, and community building experiences for highly engaged learners. Karla Repman will serve as director of The Honors College.

The parties are working on an orderly transition of all aspects of honors program administration to Shoreline Community College pursuant to their agreement. Both Quad Learning and Shoreline remain committed to helping students earn an associate degree with honors and transfer to top four-year colleges and universities.

Respectfully,
Cheryl

Recent research has shown that children have very complex understandings of differences and stereotypes. Far from being color-blind, most children are aware of how their own skin color is an advantage or disadvantage. They also judge their peers based on stereotypes that adults might like to believe they are unaware of. Because of this, it is important to give children anti-bias messages, through actions and words, to actively counter what they are witnessing in the world.

Ilsa Govan, M.A. is a co-founder of Cultures Connecting. She has more than fifteen years of experience as a classroom teacher and anti-racist community activist. Ilsa worked as an Equity and Race Specialist for Seattle Public Schools, addressing institutional racism in a large organization. She has also served on the planning teams of the Seattle Race Conference and the White Privilege Conference. Ilsa earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from Western Washington University and her Master’s Degree in Bicultural Human Development from Pacific Oaks College Northwest.

While tickets are not required, we recommend you register for the event through Eventbrite to receive updates and reminders. This event is FREE for families enrolled in SCC Preschool Coops. This event is also open to the general public and we ask that you consider making a donation at the door.

Hosted by SCC Parent Education Program and the seven off-campus SCC Parent/Child Preschool Co-ops.
