Fiscal Year-End Close Process & Deadline Memo

As the end of the 2024-2025 fiscal year approaches, we want to provide you with some important information, including upcoming year-end deadlines.

Please see the SCC 2025 Fiscal Year Closing Memo below for details.

Cast Your Vote to Name the College

Over the past few months, we’ve discussed the possibility of changing our name from Shoreline Community College to Shoreline College. This has come up in meetings and conversations across campus, and we’ve appreciated the thoughtful feedback so many of you have already shared.

A college’s name is more than a title—it reflects our identity, our mission, and the direction we’re heading. As we consider this potential change, we want to be sure that it reflects who we are and who we aspire to be.

Many colleges across the state and country have made similar updates to better reflect their identity and offerings. But a change like this is significant, and it’s essential that we consider it carefully. This is not a decision we take lightly, and your voice is essential to the process.

We’ve put together a brief survey that outlines some of the key reasons people support or oppose the change. We hope you’ll take a few minutes to review these perspectives and share your thoughts.

Mark Your Calendars – Commencement is Coming!

A group of students in graduation regalia gathered under an archway of green and yellow balloons.

With spring quarter starting this week, we’re excited to begin sharing information about Commencement!

As a campus community, we recognize Commencement as the culmination of years of hard work by our students and we are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate this achievement with them.

This year’s Commencement ceremony will take place on Friday, June 20, 2025

  • WHEN: 2:00 p.m.
  • WHERE: Gym (building 3000)

The ceremony will also be live streamed for those who are unable to attend in person.

As you can imagine, Commencement is a considerable undertaking, and help is needed to ensure its success.

Staff and faculty are encouraged to participate in a variety of different capacities, including set-up/clean-up, ushers, and venue monitors. Faculty are also encouraged to walk in the processional and to sit with students to support them as they walk across the stage. More information, including how to sign up, will be coming soon.

Supervisors are encouraged to support staff requests (where viable) to potentially shift their work schedules to support Shoreline Commencement. The Executive Team has approved the closure of offices to the public on the afternoon of the 20th to further encourage staff to participate or attend. More details regarding this closure are forthcoming.

Is there a student or faculty member that should be recognized for their contributions, growth, or positive impact? We invite you to nominate a graduating student for the Shoreline Student Service Award, or a graduating student or faculty member to serve as the Shoreline Commencement speaker. Self-nominations are welcome! Nominations may be submitted using this form and should be received by April 9, 2025.

For more information about the ceremony, please visit the Commencement website. If you have any questions, please e-mail commencement@shoreline.edu

February is American Heart Month

Image of a white heart on a red background along with the words "February is American Heart Month."

American Heart Month is a time to raise awareness about heart conditions in America.

What is Heart Disease?

Heart Disease may include a variety of heart-related irregularities, such as coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, congenital heart defects, and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). People may have strokes due to problems with their heart and any number of other symptoms; this is not a one-size-fits-all disease. Symptoms of heart disease can range from chest pain to jaw pain, to coldness in the extremities or more.

Heart Conditions in the Workplace and Classroom

While heart disease is often physically non-apparent, it can significantly impair daily life. For many individuals living with these conditions, the challenges extend beyond the physical. Research shows that 88% of employees with invisible disabilities choose not to disclose it at work to avoid stigma and discrimination. Unfortunately, this often results in social isolation, reduced productivity, and fewer opportunities for career advancement.

By offering accommodations to employees and students we can help ensure that people living with heart disease are not held back from achieving their potential, both personally and professionally. For more information about requesting employment accommodations at Shoreline, contact Human Resources at scchr@shoreline.edu. Students who may need accommodations in the classroom may reach out to Student Accessibility Services (SAS) at sas@shoreline.edu

Risk Factors

Heart disease can have many causes and can affect anyone at any stage of life. If you are interested in learning more about risk factors and what you can do to maintain heart health, talk to a medical provider. If you need assistance finding a medical provider talk to your insurance provider. If you need assistance becoming insured talk to your employer or find a medical provider

Awareness

Let’s take action this February by wearing red, learning more about heart disease, and supporting those in our community who live with it every day. Every body is different. If you are concerned about potential heart disease, seek out medical advice as soon as possible.
